Access QNAP NAS from internet

Post by HomerSimpson »

Hi,

I have a QNAP NAS Modell TVS-663 with the firmware version 5.0.0.2055.

Now I enabled only some ip addresses to access the NAS.

If I did not add my WAN IP address, I cannot access the device from internet. After I allow also my WAN IP it works.

My question is: Is there a posibility to change/add the WAN IP automaticaly? Or can I write a script to over the SSL shell to do it?

Tanks a lot!

You are thinking wrong ..your WAN IP will not access your NAS OTHER IPs will (btw always change your GUI from German to English when asking questions in an English forum)
But accessing your NAS by exposing is a horrible idea (see all the malware threads) leverage a VPN to do so (does not cost anything)

My network setting is this:

I have a router (FritzBox 7590). Behind the router a opnSense appliance that provides my LAN. In this LAN (10.22.10.0/24) is my qnap device.

So the FritzBox is forwarding the traffic from my public WAN ip to my opnSence and it is forwarding it to the Qnap.
You can see this also in the firewall log of the opnSense

So the NAS will see the public IP of my routers WAN address...

"So the NAS will see the public IP of my routers WAN address..."

... and exactly this is the problem. Don't do it.

Thats a good point.

Is there any posibility to share some data if the NAS is not accessible from internet?

I have a backup of my data in azure cloud. but hopefuly I don't need it :-)

opnSense and VPN, either IKEv2 or Wireguard is the buzzword here.
Nothing else!

Use dropbox or something else to share data.

share as in .. to oneself (vpn) to others (don't do it)

safest alternative is a dropbox/onedrive/etc account, you can sync a folder from your QNAP to a share hoster via hybrid mount and they can get real time synced between the two, this way you do not expose your NAS to WAN but have a way to securely share data

Ok - that could be a way to do it - with hybrid mount!

Thank you all for your feedback!
