[TUTORIAL] How to test the speed of your local network

Post by thorejoha »

Hello everyone

If you wonder how too test your speed in your local network, from your computer to the Nas i have one nice solution.

On the speedtest page http://speedtest.net it is possible to test your internet connection.
But if you download the zipfolder mini from location
http://www.speedtest.net/mini.php
It is possible too test your local network.
The program is meant to use over the internett, but if you think its fun to do tests you can try this.
You can altso download Zipfile here: http://files.speedtest.ookla.com/releases/mini.zip

Unzip this folder under the Qwebfolder on your NAS
The Webserver must be activatied.

Then visit the file index-php.htm with yor webrowser.
http://mydomain/mini/index-php.html
Or
http://mylocalIPadress/mini/index-php.html

You can rename the Indexfile to only index.html if you want.

I did some test with this, and here is my results.

First my speed from computer too Nas with Wireless.
Result: Download 16662 Upload: 12075
The Wlan router is D-Link DAP-1353.
This supports altso 300Mbps but I have only 802.11G - 54Mbps card in my computer.

Then my speed from Computer too Nas with cable.
Result: Download 34257 Upload: 16385

You can see from this, that my Wlan router is much more slower then Cabel.
This is normal.

Please post your results if you test this.
Its fun too se what cind of results you have in your networks.

Merry Cristmas

Best Regards

Thorejoha

Hello everyone
New test done.
Please read, and dont be angry if our speed is not as first told

It is possible to do this test your self,

I did some tests after I have seen your results.
I tested downloading i several ways.
Here is the resault from the test in Exel format.
I used this diffrent connections.
Wlan windows copy, Wlan FTP copy, Wired direct to Nas short cabel, Wired to switch long cabel.
I used stop watch for all types of download.
Please se the image attachment for result.
http://i44.tinypic.com/2wnpap4.jpg

But still there is fun to do the connection speed test .
I think the normal result of a wired connection should be around 96000 download.
This is what you got if you connect directly to the Qnas.

Please download the Exel file if you want to do your own test.
Only change the green numbers, and have fun.

Your wired connection looks very fast.
Maybe i have to change my broadband router too a newer one.
I use the SpeedTouch 5x6 broadband router as dhcp server, and the switch in this one could be a little bit slow.
It is only when I download big files from the server I use the wire.
Maybe I should be satisfied with the speed.

Wired gigabit network.
Tested on TS-509 pro.

Download 402942

Use the forum search feature before posting.

Use RAID and external backups. RAID will protect you from disk failure, keep your system running, and data accessible while the disk is replaced, and the RAID rebuilt. Backups will allow you to recover data that is lost or corrupted, or from system failure. One does not replace the other.

I have netgear 3700 router. usually i got around 9- 11MB/s when transferring files to my nas using 2.4ghz.

However some days ago i connected 5ghz band which my router is famous for not being so fast according to most reviewers. at 5ghz band i got around 15 MB/s.

So today i connect dual ethernet from my nas to my router with the setting active backup (fail over) i come up between 18MB/s-21MB/s at tops. Can drop below 18MB/s sometimes.

with 18MB/s im very happy and see no reason to run wired as i dont move big files that often. My router however is on 2 meters distance and if you have your router in another room, wired might seem to be a better solution.

BTW this is when sending big files , if you send many small files even a wired connection would drop significantly in speed.

P.s. i disconnect 1 ethernet and ran only one still same speed @5ghz band. Systemtemp is 47c with one ethernet , and with both it becomes around 50 and sometimes 51c.

System Temperature 47°C/116°F @1 cable connected.
