I'm not sure if this is even the right section for my question, but what the heck:) If it's not mods will move this thread.
Please tell me do I have to run a web server on my box - which is TS-419+, when all I want is to have a web browser on my NAS? I make some vids and I would like to just be able to point to the appropriate directory on my NAS for the editing software to store output files to, and then upload those vids to youtube so I can turn off my PC and go to sleep.
So Do I need to run web server just for that? If so I see it as going hunting for a fly with bazooka....:/

And you'll probably need to install a text-based web-browser like lynx to get the auth token.

Re: Web browser
there is no out of the box solution then
your nas is also too old (and wrong architecture) for a VM with gui to take over that task
so either learn that "complicated" stuff(that upload script), upgrade your nas (for VM support) or just keep using the pc

Re: Web browser
Just a quick question, I'm having my eye and preparing to buy QNAP TS-453A-4G Will this NAS would be good for the job I want it to do? It says it has VM

Re: Web browser
well what kind of budget do you have?binks77 wrote:Just a quick question, I'm having my eye and preparing to buy QNAP TS-453A-4G Will this NAS would be good for the job I want it to do? It says it has VM
Cause if you wait Q3 this year roughly, the ryzen models may be available though i'm not sure about pricing. They'll have much more processing power for vm. Their comparable to i3, i5 and i7 but with more cores/threads.
but yes the x53a series is a good start point
The TS-x53A series also features QNAP's new QTS-Linux dual operating system, which gives the NAS a Linux desktop through a keyboard, mouse and monitor (via on-board HDMI). QNAP released desktop virtualization through Virtualization Station several generations ago. The difference with this new dual operating system is that Linux is more integrated than before.
The TS-x53A family offers as few as two and as many as eight drive bays. All four models utilize the aforementioned QTS-Linux OS and enhanced audio features. They also employ Intel's quad-core Celeron N3150 (Braswell) SoC that consumes just six watts of power under full load.
For each model, there are two SKUs with different amounts of RAM build-in. The -4G systems include two 2GB DDR3 modules, while the -8G configurations come with two 4GB DIMMs, hitting the processor's upper limit for expansion.
The Celeron N3150 supports Virtualization technology, that enhances performance of virtualized applications.
Celeron N3150 vs Ryzen 7, 1700

or vs the cheapest ryzen 5 1400

4 Cores, 4 Threads
@1.6 GHz Braswell
4 Cores, 8 Threads
@3.2GHz Zen (2017)
depends on your budget, how much cpu power you need, etc

Re: Web browser
About £400. The one I'm looking for is £390
And I don't care about cores/threads or whatever else. I just want NAS to store my files and enable me to do uploads to youtube so I can turn off my PC. That's all
