Re: [ Ubiquiti UniFi ] [ 6.0.43.0 ] Wi-Fi Management

Post by Moogle Stiltzkin »

finally replaced my old asus router wireless ap, for a ubiquiti unifi ap lite.

i setup the unifi controller qpkg on the qnap ts-877

but my new unifi ap was not detected.

so had to do some changes

- set dhcp relay. setup a fixed ip within lan dhcp range.

- removed vlans setup on hardware switches (suspected interference due to a misconfiguration related to this)

- factory reset the unifi wireless ap

- rebooted the switches and pfsense router

- used the ethernet for poe. so the poe injector for ac adaptor is not required

and sure enuff now the qnap unifi controller detected my new ubiquiti ap lite, and i managed to update and assign it.

Any tips for setting this up? I'm not using any ubiquiti switches/gateway, just only that single ubiquiti unifi ap lite device to go with my qotom pfsense router, and some connected switches :X

i would have gotten a unifi 6, but it's not available within the local market :( couldn't find one.

anyway for my initial impression, the wifi signal is sufficiently good and stable for me. also it doesn't seem to have any heating issues for me to worry about :D

If you have only one Unifi AP there is not much you need to do. keep your eye open on the Controllers Dashboard especially the "Anomalies" and "Association Failures" of all devices, you may find a few I have about 30 anomalies each 24hour period - that seems fairly normal, when its in to the 100's then it needs tweaked.

I have a full Unifi Network, UDM Pro, 2x AC Pro's, 16 Port PoE Switch(150W), 8 Port PoE Switch(60W) and 2 Flex Mini switches too. once you have a good setup make sure you backup the configuration away from the Controller storage itself, just in case you need to wipe the controller.

Also if you upgrade software, do a backup before upgrading, just in case.

note: Backups can be restored as long as they have the same version of software running when the backup took place.

The Unifi community forums are pretty good as long as you give good information on your setup, like Wi-Fi settings, firmware revisions etc.

One thing I did do differently than any normal network was to create two separate Wi-Fi Networks.

one for my internal stuff, PC, NAS and Weather Station/Webserver. then other was for IoT devices like of Amazon Echo's, Sonos Arc/Sub/Surrounds etc, Nest Thermostat and Smoke Alarms etc. (anything that need just internet access)

with these two networks you create two VLANs. Default and one other. then create a Firewall rule to block IoT from seeing the default VLAN. I allow Default to see IoT however.

hope that helps.

hm... my first time experience with the unifi, is that thk god they have a CLOUDless controller.... which i could manage from my own local device, in this case the qnap which i used this unifi qpkg.

The first thing i noticed is that the controller qpkg is slightly outdated..... so are people using a docker method instead? :' but that seems a headache to setup, thats why i didn't touch that yet. I figured if i wait a bit longer, the qpkg should be updated soon enough i hoped.

i had to initially scrap the vlans i setup on my switches, because something about them was intefering with getting connectivity to the wireless ap. have to figure that one out when i'm free x_x;

yes i could do the guest wifi on the unifi using a vlan, but then i would need to also configure the vlan on the 2 switches that is on route to the pfsense router. thats why i left that out for now.

anyway i hope lawrence is right, that ubiquiti doesn't suddenly decide with a firmware update to make it cloud only controller at some point. but for now seems like this is the best option

6.0.45 outdated? you mean over UniFi Network Controller 6.1.51? which only support UXG Pro at present and is beta (though I'd call in Alpha.)

Overview
* This release requires 1.9.x or newer on the UDM-Base/UDM-Pro. - 1.9.0 is not even released yet.
* This release requires 0.4.x or newer on the UXG-Pro.

6.0.45 is just released as official, and is pretty stable.

as to docker, I cannot comment, I have a UDM Pro, it is my controller. qpkg is only updated when a new official is released. not when a new beta is released. cloud is ok, been used to it now since the UDM Pro, and once you have a cloud account, you just create local account anyway. simple.

my controller shows
6.0.43

i think i was offered 6.0.45 in the ui, but it didn't seem to update controller so i skipped. now i can't get it to show again, don't know how to undo the skip. or if i can even update controller that way or not.

but it did update the ap firmware successfully though.

i made sure not to use the auto update firmware feature. i'll leave auto check enabled, but i rather go reddit or somewhere to check if their new firmware is good before i update, just in case. seems there is an auto backup config? so i let that be, since that is good to leave on :D

I was on 6.0.45.0, and randomly today the controller on my qnap was unreachable (internet still working fine). I tried to stop/start the container, no luck. Then I restarted the NAS, no luck.

Finally I upgraded to the latest version 6.1.71.0 - but still no luck.

If you tell me how to get the logs, I can gather anything you need to help debug! I'm not super great at navigating but if you send commands I can execute them in SSH as required.

Thanks.

???? Sorry I'm lost. what has 5.43.35 UAP firmware got to do with this 6.1.7.1 Controller software topic?

5.43.35 is General release and Stable, I've been running this for about just over two weeks.

Finally I upgraded to the latest version 6.1.71.0 - but still no luck.

If you tell me how to get the logs, I can gather anything you need to help debug! I'm not super great at navigating but if you send commands I can execute them in SSH as required.

Thanks.

Here is the image when I go directly to the IP of the USG gateway, and log in:

So your now upgraded to 6.1.71, can you access this via https://unifi.ui.com/dashboard ?
