[Request] BOINC QPKG

Post by Don »

I am requesting a QPKG of BOINC be built.

The Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing is an open-source middleware system that supports volunteer and grid computing. Originally developed to support the SETI@home project, it became generalized as a platform for other distributed applications in areas as diverse as mathematics, linguistics, medicine, molecular biology, climatology, environmental science, and astrophysics, among others. BOINC aims to enable researchers to tap into the enormous processing resources of multiple personal computers around the world.

What a great way to contribute to scientific research by using your idle time on your NAS. You can select what projects you contribute to and how much resources it will use. I am running it on a Windows 2012 server and a Windows 10 Surface Pro and it does not slow them down at all. There is a Linux version available and it would be great if we could get a QPKG so we could run it. I know my QNAPs sit idle most of the time and if I can put those idle cycles to good use why not.

Perhaps QNAP Stephane could compile one if he had some free time?

I use Seti@Home + later BOINC since 1999

But back in the days the energy saving protocols and tricks used by the CPU manufactures were not as advanced as they are today. CPU are not realy wasting "idle cycles" anymore.

CPU's clock down or (shut certain cores off entirely) when not in use. That in turn lowers the power needed and heat generated. So running BOINC will increase energy your costs and noise of your NAS.

Yeah I did Seti@home years ago also.

This is true. What I meant by idle cycles was times when the CPU(s) had low utilization. Yes BOINC will increase utilization but you can configure how many CPUs it uses and to what percentage also. So you can control how much power Is needed and how much heat is generated.

Nice!!

Can't it be managed via a manager running on another system (Windows PC)?

Use RAID and external backups. RAID will protect you from disk failure, keep your system running, and data accessible while the disk is replaced, and the RAID rebuilt. Backups will allow you to recover data that is lost or corrupted, or from system failure. One does not replace the other.

Just an FYI that the BIONC manager does let you control BIONC running on other systems.
