Using Azure for QNAP Back Ups (Looking for UK feedback?)

Post by parkerc »

Hi

I'm hoping to find someone/anyone in the UK who is using Azure to back up their NAS data ?
If that's you, I'd really like to hear how you are finding it - e.g some question I have are the following?

How you are finding the QNAP App integration ?
What option did you sign up with, e.g Storage, and payment Plan, e.g. PAYG, 6 month etc did you go for?
How much data are you using, and what sort of price are you regularly paying ?
Would you recommend it as a way to create an offsite back up?
Anything else you could share ?

Many thanks ;)

WoW - never considered Azure as a NAS backup. Always used the machine provisioning to spin up VMs and such.

Don't you think it is costly, i mean 100GB would be £60/month using their 0.1273/GB/Month after the first 5GB free allowance.

The way I backup offsite is using a simple cheap 2 Bay NAS drive - at my brothers house(!). 127 miles away from me!

Hi Zulf.

I know what you mean, but checking their pricing -> http://azure.microsoft.com/en-gb/pricin ... s/storage/

It seems to suggest for their LOCALLY REDUNDANT STORAGE (LRS) service is 0.0153 GBP per GB per month (up to the first TB)? Which and correct me if I'm wrong would be 1.53 GBP per month for 100GB ?

Surely I'm missing something ?

* I have a redundant ReadyNAS duo so if there is a post you've run that explains how you've set up your remote (brother's house) back up solution - please let me know, I'd like to explore that too ;)

Not sure mate, will check the pricing when I can get my head around it! Else i'll just ask someone from Microsoft.

As for the remote backup, it's pretty simple. I configured Himachi as a site to site software VPN service, once i'm connected I simply run a robocopy script that does the deltas.
It's not a great idea on stuff like my PST archives, as even a 1KB change means the whole 2-3GB file gets copied so I have exclusions. In the main it works, and I get a robocopy log that I can scan very quickly for errors or problems.

We both now have fibre connections, i'm with Sky and he's with BT. So my upload is 25MB+ and similar for him to. He has nowhere near as much data as me, and he doesn't consider much of it as critical!

Simply put the QNAP will support "Azure Storage Accounts" not "Backup Vaults" which is what used by Azure Backup that's installed on Server system.

Simply Login to your Azure account and go to "Data Services" -> "Storage" -> the create a storage account with a URL name that's unique.
Select the location to store the file storage account and replication type if any at all, preferable to use Local though.

I use this method from a TS-453 Pro to Azure and have no issue.

Alternate method would be have another QNAP somewhere else and use RTRR.
