Costs for Amazon Glacier
Sorry for the disturb. I have a question regarding prices and maybe you can help me to understand one small detail.
When I'll upload 10.000 photos a 2 MB to Amazon Glacier, it is then 10,000 Upload requests?
I want to backup my data with about 400GB and about 1.000.000 files. How I have to calculate my costs per month. Without deleting files newer then 90 days. What is the price for full restore in emergency case?
Thank you for you help.

Re: Costs for Amazon Glacier
my guess
10.000 files = 10.000 requests
( based on Ireland prices )
Monthly prices = 0.004 * 400 = 2 USD + VAT and Taxes
Upload : 1.000.000 * 0.055 / 1000 = 55 + VAT and Taxes
Full restore from
0.03 * 400 + 0.011 * 1000000 = 11012 USD + VAT and Taxes
to 0.0025 *400 + 0.0275 * 1.000.000 / 1000 = 28.50 USD + VAT + Taxes
For a personal use, consider reducing the number of files merging them with rar for instance
With 1000 rar files
Upload : 0.055
Full restore : 1.0275 to 23 USD
Edit :
There seem to be a bug in current version with large files not uploading to Glacier that should be fixed in next version of the Qapp

Do we know if this has been resolved in the current version of hybrid backup? I had some large personal videos fail to upload a while back and I haven't tried it since.ppahtde wrote:Edit : There seem to be a bug in current version with large files not uploading to Glacier that should be fixed in next version of the Qapp

Re: Costs for Amazon Glacier
Well, I tried using the hybrid backup tool to glacier last week and it hung up after uploading 3 files. I'm now resorting to manual external drive backups (which I throw in my safe) in place of a process that I can no longer count on to work consistently.

Re: Costs for Amazon Glacier
I think for data restore you also need to add data transfer our from glacier to internet, if you are using more than 1GB/month (which I think would be the case if restoring 400GB of data).ppahtde wrote:my guess

https://aws.amazon.com/glacier/pricing/
"Up to 10 TB / month $0.090 per GB"
so for 400GB that is 400 * 0.09 = 36 USD + VAT + Taxes
(probably could count only 399 GB as first GB is free, but I like round numbers )
so all together for a full restore that would be (in best case) 36 + 28.50 = 64,50 USD + VAT + Taxes.
Please correct me if I misunderstood that pricing policy.

This unofficial Glacier price calculation tool may help get you a ballpark... http://liangzan.net/aws-glacier-calculator/

Re: Costs for Amazon Glacier
Just to update this thread -
On the current version of the hybrid backup application, all is now working for me. I had to delete the re-add the backup location to the glacier site and do a new full backup, this was successful as has each subsequent differential backup. Many thanks to QNAP for working on this tool, an excellent feature for offsite backup options.

Re: Costs for Amazon Glacier
I've setup Glacier and pushed about 1.5 TB over before I looked at my bill.
Each file (aka archive) counts as a request at I think .002 cents or something. I have 8TB of family pictures and movies. It cost me around $60 to transfer 1.5 TB and around $6 per month to maintain. So if I push everything over, and at some point have to restore, I am going to spend a fortune. So, I'm now here reading.
"NumberOfArchives": 839241,
"SizeInBytes": 1639730809194
Frankly, I don't think Glacier is a solution at all for home users. For business users who will zip everything on prem, and push it's fine. I want to browse my images right off the NAS.

Re: Costs for Amazon Glacier
I don't believe the pricing information posted here is correct. Data into Glacier will be a "PUT" request, which is $0.05 per 1,000 requests. Once the data is in Glacier, it will be $0.004 per GB/Month for storage. Pulling data out of Glacier will have three charges associated with it: Retrieval, Retrieval Request and Data Transfer OUT From Amazon Glacier To Internet.
Accurate Glacier pricing can be found https://aws.amazon.com/glacier/pricing
In your example of 10,000 items, which eqautes to 10 requests. The cost model is 5 cents per 1000. The cost would be 50 cents.
I am in the process of signing up now. Also, there is now a Glacier app on QNAP instead of the Hybrid Cloud Sync
