Do you recommend Glacier?

Post by emmitsuks »

I am considering various cloud storage options, Google Cloud, Azure, and AWS. I don't have a lot of data. I would back up approximately 300GB of family photos/videos collected over the last 18 years. Unless both my primary and backup hard drives fail, I would never need to access the data. Glacier is a great option bc of the cost. It was designed for those not requiring frequent access. I do like the idea of using the Glacier app and having the automated integration with AWS. Just throw it on a schedule and be done.

I was looking for some feedback from those of you who have used it. I appreciate it.

Thanks

idrive 2tb cloud backup for $ 4.34 monthly supports NAS.

https://www.cloudwards.net/award/best-o ... -services/

for that price 2tb, if that is all you need, then that price is fine.

But if you expect more storage than that, idrive starts becoming too expensive :S (their 5tb plan might be ok)

https://www.idrive.com/pricing

they also got this offer too.

whenever it says the price for first year only/2 year only, look at and ask them what the reverted price will be after that time (crucial). these types of services try to get you committed, then later pull the carpet out under you :?

after that point they jack up the price :( so make sure if you are okay with the reverted price once the duration expires, otherwise you will be in a situation you got to look elsewhere for a backup.

here is a review for idrive in 2019

Microsoft Office 365 Home 1y subscriptions include 1 TB or 5x1 TB storage (1 user $60/y; 5 users $100/y during sales $60/y). For 300 GB this may be the most user friendly option.

In general I recommend Glacier, but the QNAP software for interfacing with it is not sufficiently robust for most use cases. The threads on this forum detail the frustrations people have had, and the lack of official support.

If you happen to be using macOS and just need a Glacier client, then https://www.freezeapp.net/ is great.

I use Glacier and have not had any problems.

All my media is on my Qnap, I also use acronis backup to backup my laptop. My g/f's apple stuff back up to a seperate NAS using time machine that once a week is copied over to my NAS. The whole lot is then backed up to Glacier after the timemachine copy finishes over night via a schedule batch job.

I suppose the proof of the pudding as always comes when you need to restore your backup, but since I don't have another 36Tb NAS lying around I don't want to try it until it's broke..... Hmmmm....

Be prepare for a long initial upload though. Mine took over 500 hours.

I don't love the Glacier app but it does its job and Glacier storage is cheap. Currently backing up 3TB from my NAS for less than $15/month. Initial upload was slow but that's really the only pain point I've seen. I DO wish that QNAP Glacier app had notification options so that I didn't have to periodically check the app to make sure things are running as expected but really that's a nitpick.

What's your cost-ish for using glacial. I have ~15 tb of raw video for work projects that I'd love to have backed up to the cloud.

The cost is not on the upload I get charged 14gbp per month for my storage.

The cost is for retrieval which is a 24 hour-ish turn around.

I can't remember the costs I was quoted per gigabyte for this but to my way of thinking it doesn't matter as long as you get your stuff back. I've retrieved a few files as a test and that works fine.

Speak to AWS they were very helpful in giving coatings.
