Unable to Backup to Webdav

Post by peterbata »

Hello all.

I have spent a considerable amount of time trying to get hybrid backup sync to backup to webdav. Here is how I am setup and what I have attempted so far.

QNAP TS-269 Pro.

1) Created a Digital Ocean droplet (Ubuntu 14.x and Apache) Mapped network drive in Windows 10. Able to create folders add / delete files.
https://www.digitalocean.com/community/ ... untu-14-04

2) Followed QNAP Hybrid Backup Sync to Webdav
https://www.qnap.com/en/how-to/tutorial ... ackup-sync

3) Create a backup job to Cloud. Select local files to backup (6 small files 3.46mb). Select backup destination. Select backup now.
4) Task begins but takes forever to get going. Eventually it times out and I receive several email notifications that looks something like this

Server Name: QNAP
IP Address: 192.168.2.2
Date/Time: 12-07-2018 10:46:24
Level: Warning

[Hybrid Backup Sync] Backup job "Cloud Backup 2": Failed to upload the file from "/share/cynthia/New Resume 2.doc". Invalid path or denied permission. Check the file.

These folders are created successfully in webdav parent directory: QNAP/CloudBackup but are empty

Note: I have successfully created backup jobs from other backup software that we use. BackupAssist to WebDav
Note: I have successfully used Hybrid Backup Sync to send backup job to a Google Cloud Platform bucket.
Note: I have successfully used Hybrid Backup Sync to backup to Yandesk.Disk via Create Backup Job / Create Sync Job / Sync with Cloud / Local to Cloud sync

Note: I have used the very same folder / files mentioned above (6 small files 3.46mb)

Your assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Peter

I just tried out using a Hetzner Storage Box via WebDAV and ran into the exact same problem.
"Invalid path or denied permission."

Anyone got any ideas?

Sadly, I am not getting any help from the folks at QNAP.

Same problem here with backup to two different WebDAV destinations, adrive.com and magentacloud.de.
Further hints would be appreciated.

Not that it's any consolation. But, this is a response that I received from QNAP technical support back in late July of this year.

Thanks for contacting QNAP and I'm sorry for delay on respond.

I believe it is not possible to do that, but I will check and get back to you shortly.

Thanks

Hi all,

I would like to share some intermediate findings about the root cause of the problem in my case. Both webdav server implementations in my case (adrive.com, magentacloud.de) seem to answer with the wrong status on requests which create folders.
The HybridBackup log entry looks like this:

Code: Select all

OperationFailed: Failed to create directory "QNAP".
 URL : https://webdav.magentacloud.de:443/QNAP
 Operation : MKCOL QNAP
Expected code : 201 Created, 301 Moved Permanently, 403 Forbidden, 405 Method Not Allowed
 Actual code : 200 OK
The QNAP client expects code 201 (as defined by the WebDAV specification), but the server answers 200.

One work-around is, to create the folder structure on the backup destination by hand. This is only feasible for a handful of folders.

The solutions would be:
1. All WebDAV cloud providers fix their implementation.
2. QNAP relaxes their implementation of the specification by allowing 200 as a valid response code.

BR,

bd

@brobding I have tried manually creating folders as well. That did not help in my case. But, thank you for reporting back with that info.

Hi,
I've the same issue. But the workaround has worked for me.
However, I have too many folders to process in order to create them manually. I hope a quick fix !
And can someone tell me where are the hybrid backup station logs please ? Thank you very much.

What workaround was that?
