Can I use PC based AVG with my NAS?

Post by Beemer2 »

I have a multi user paid-for copy of AVG Internet Security installed in my Windows 7 desktop. Can I use this with my new NAS?

My bet is that if you set up a Windows VM on the NAS, and mapped the NAS shared to the Windows VM as a mapped drive, that you could get the McAfee to scan it. Not sure if McAfee's on access scanning works on mapped drives, but you definitely can target mapped network drives when you set up a targeted scan in the McAfee console.
Past or present NAS's: QNAP TS-221 (RAID 1), QNAP TS-251-8G (RAID 1), QNAP TS-253 Pro (8GB RAM, RAID 1), QNAP TS-563 (16GB RAM, QM2-2S SSD w/r cache, 4x6TB RAID 10 & 1x500MB SSD RAID 0), QNAP TS-473 (64GB RAM, QM2-2S SSD w/r cache, 4x6TB RAID 10 & 2TB SSD RAID 0) & Netgear ReadyNAS Duo (RAID 1)

You could map/mount a NAS SMB share to your desktop and have it run a scan against the files.

More important question though is WHERE do you think the infected files are going to come from that get stored on your NAS?
