NAS disappears when wifi extender is connected through LAN

Post by amerh »

Here's my setup

Router >2.5G> M2108-2C switch >10G> QSW-2104-2T switch >2.5G> TS435Xeu

NAS up and running and working perfectly fine.

When I connect a lan cable from the 2104-2T switch to a TP-Link extender, the TP-Link works fine, but the NAS disappears from Qfinder and the network.
If I disconnect the cable, the NAS comes back.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

More info please

Why is the NAS connected via cable and range extender?
Is it two different IPs on the NAS side (using two NIC's) ?
Or are you "swip swapping" one cable around between switch and range extender on the NAS side ?
And why is the range extender connected to the switch ? If anything the range extender should be connected to the NAS LAN port (as Wifi bridge)

So more info needs to be given, right now it makes no sense to me

The NAS and the wifi extender were not supposed to have any sort of communication. The NAS is connected through LAN, via 2 switches since it's in a room far from the router room.

The extender is in the same room as the NAS, and it has trouble catching signal from the router. Since there is a switch connected via LAN in the same room I thought I can run an ethernet cable from that switch to the extender: this way the extender receives LAN and broadcasts WIFI.

What's strange is that when the same switch is connected to the NAS and the extender, the network seems to prefer the extender over the NAS. The first works perfectly while the latter disappear.

Thank you for your follow ups.

A common issue would be that either the extender or any of the devices behind the extender are getting getting the IP of the NAS (probably via fixed IP handed out within DHCP scope)

Make sure that no device has the same IP as the NAS

I set a manual IP for the extender, made sure it is not the same as the NAS as shown on the router.
Same result.

are you making sure that all manual IP's are outside of DHCP scope ?

They are. I even tried very wide ranges of IPs

Maybe try to factory reset the range extender/bridge maybe the NAS MAC is still in the device somehow

I'm personally having a lot of difficulty understanding your setup and the issue. You seem to have it overcomplicated.

If there is a switch in the same room as the NAS, why are you using an extender? What do you mean by "prefer"? Overall, it sounds like a configuration issue, but I suspect you will have to try and simplify your setup for troubleshooting.

Are you sure that the "extender" you are trying to use actually has the capabilities that you are expecting? Some have ethernet ports, but can't act as "switches" and are essentially one way. Maybe some sort of diagram would be helpfui

I fixed the issue by switching the extender to access point mode. Now connected by a LAN, it broadcasts WIFI and the NAS is till visible on the network.

Thank you both for your help.

Here's the diagram to answer your question. Any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks..
