TS-410 4.2.6 - Cannot Reset for Password - Help Appreciated.

Post by atacama40 »

Hi all,

Have done this before but a long time ago. I understood that the reset button on the back needs be pressed for 3 seconds and that should return Username to Admin and Password to Admin.

I tried this but it does not appear to work .... tried with Admin and admin.

It's QTS 4.2.6 and a vanilla machine set up. Any help to get access to the NAS again would be hugely appreciated .... not getting anywhere right now.

admin/admin was an old default username/password

most QTS's are now

admin/macaddress (of first port)

did you try that?

this might only work for QTS 4.4x and above but worth a try. failing that you may contact QNAP directly.
Regards Simon

Hi there and thanks for the quick reply.

Yes is what I thought, that earlier models and before 4.4.1 was admin and admin. Tried that a couple of times but no joy.

Also did read about an option to use mac address. If I understood correctly the mac address is shown on the Qpro screen at the bottom but only in later versions.

Can the mac address be found elsewhere? On a label or suchlike?

Hi there, many thanks for coming back to me .... yes I found it, I should have updated.

So currently I'm trying Admin (and admin) ... not sure if upper case A or lower and then same again in password field. But also the Mac address headed MAC1 off the rear label.

Neither of those combinations seem be working just now. Strange ... have definitely done this before at some time.

On the Mac address, I used capitals same as the label. Missing something here ......

MAC address is only used on 4.4.1 and later (see link)..

why exactly do you need to reset your password so often?

So often? Blimey can't be for a few years since needed last time.

Honest answer is I'm not quite sure. I had left the NAS with standard access for a long time. Then maybe a year or two back I generated a proper PW and stored that on Dashlane.

It had not been accessed for quite a while then some days back I tried access the NAS and for reasons not entirely understood, the PW generated and stored in Dashlane had not taken correctly. I've not needed to use it since but today was that day when I did.

I remember the procedure previously being straight forward and so looked it up on-line. But it did not work for me.

So no I don't think it's a common activity for me.

Just because passwords do not change themselves..thats why I wondered (maybe unauthorizedb3rd party access, malware, etc)

Is a point Dolbyman but no we are pretty good on security stuff ..... real passwords, 2 part and complex, dashlane password manager for everything (ironically except NAS until more recent) and full N360 tools on all devices.

And on the Netgear Orbi etc we use their security product ... think called Armor. In addition we don't use much wireless, 95% is wired connection

In the main I think we are pretty good. I think the reality is that the user address stored in the password manager as an IP address not an email. The PW manager defaults to email as username. I think something in the storing of the Username and PW got confused outside of QNAP and then when we came to access we found the reality.

Not for certain but the most likely I think. ironically if had left as default I would likely be in and using.

But still open to ideas what to try to get into the NAS

No unfortunately whilst Qfinder shows the NAS, IP, MAc etc, if I try the SSH option, it behaves exactly the same as other login options.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Did you wait for the beep? Then try: (per the link)
QTS 4.4.1 and older versions

The default password of admin is admin, You can login the NAS via admin/admin after resetting the NAS.

If a 3 second reset does not work (one can disable that button in the GUI .. bad idea though) you can always kill the NAS and start from scratch

Is there any data on the NAS and if so is it backed up well (I hope it is) .. if so .. just take out the drives format them and start from scratch

If you do not have backups, assamble the RAID(?) in a linux computer backup your data (you can do that with these 13 year old devices.. with new ones, not that easy) and then kill the NAS and start fresh
