multiple FATAL errors in ElephantDrive log

Post by Reneke917 »

Hi,

I noticed that backup was not working all the time.

I see multiple fatal error messages in the log:
2021-02-18 14:22:17.051 | FATAL | WatchDog::Impl::run(WatchDog:62) | Too long thread idle. Thread ID 0xb6fe1000. Thread started in 'void ed::Dispatcher::Impl::run(bool)'. Last call message: 'FSMonitorRunOnce'
2021-02-18 14:22:17.105 | INFO | ed::platform::process_signal_handler(Platform:176) | Crash trace "/share/MD0_DATA/.qpkg/ElephantDrive/var/lib/elephantdrive/backtrace" saved
2021-02-18 14:22:17.105 | FATAL | ed::platform::process_signal_handler(Platform:178) | Watchdog terminate received.
2021-02-18 14:22:28.670 | INFO | ed::Dispatcher::Impl::initialize(Dispatcher:377) | Starting "elephantdrive" 3.6.4 (GIT:b1a4a4c5049121f09222e44579b8aabafb54fc4d)...

Any idea what might cause these errors?

Kind Regards,

Hi Reneke917,

Thanks for posting your question. A few quick notes...

- The error "Too long thread idle" in the logs is a common error in older versions of ElephantDrive, and can indicate a variety of potential underlying causes. It could be as simple as a transient loss of connectivity or something else, depending on how frequently you are seeing the error

- While we can't fully diagnose based on the limited logs posted, we can see two things: a) this did result in a fatal error, but it looks like the "watchdog" process correctly observed this and restarted the application (that's the last line of the logs), so watchdog did his job (good boy, Wachdog!), and b) you are running version 3.6.4 of the NAS application which is in fact slightly out of date.

The first thing we would like to do is help you get on the latest and greatest version of the application. We can then determine if this issue is recurring and serious. Would you be willing to create a case in our ticketing system by sending an email to support@elephantdrive.com? All you need to do is cut and paste a link to this post and we will reach back out with upgrade instructions and an offer to assist you live.

Thanks for asking a great question!

Best,
ElephantDrive

Hello Elephantdrive,

Thank you for your feedback.
I have downloaded and installed version 3.8.4 now and will monitor the log in the next days. :)
I will post my feedback here and in case I still have problems, I will log a ticket in the support system.

Kind Regards,

Sounds good. Please do not hesitate to post here or reach out to our support directly with any follow up questions.

Also, glad you are updated to 3.8.4, but just so you are aware version 4 is coming soon! Faster and with a number of edge case bug fixes.

Hello,

I see less fatal errors.

However, I notice that despite of the option to monitor my system, not all files are backed before Elephantdrive switches to monitoring.
2021-03-04 13:48:14.282 | INFO | Backup job 'PRIVATE' scan complete. Switched to monitoring

This job backs up the file system where my cameras put their stream output files.

I notice an message indicating that there is a max of directories it watches:
2021-03-04 13:50:57.155 | INFO | Starting backup job 'PRIVATE' ...
2021-03-04 13:50:57.478 | INFO | Maximum number of directory watches: 3000000

Is this limit for 1 backup job, or for all backup jobs together?
The Surveilance Station software on my QNAP NAS creates a folder each day, and subfolder each hour.

Could this be (part of) the cause?

Kind Regards,

R
