Re: How to remotely mount drive in file system?
so it turned out to be a typo - i had remote-cert-tis server (tis) - should be remote-cert-tls server.
so now i run sudo ovpn /eytc/openvpn/client1.ovpn
and... no warnings or erros - i guess its running??
But now what - i cant see it in my File manager. How do i get it to appear there? or is this just a command line file mover thing?

Re: How to remotely mount drive in file system?
riht so, you are saying the open vpn is probably working? (and i have to use this command each day i want to connect to the qnap?)
that the qnap is probably set up for this?
that the router is set up for this
and now i just have to work out is how to mount everythging?
currently i have made a folder called Files ni media/ and mount the nas in my fstab with
0.1.2.3:/Public /media/Files nfs auto,nofail,noatime,nolock,intr,tcp,actimeo=1200 0 0
do i have to use samba to mount this?
or can i just edit the line in my fstab to:
mysyername.mynetgear.com:/Public /media/Files nfs auto,nofail,noatime,nolock,intr,tcp,actimeo=1200 0 0
i'll give it a go

No idea if the VPN is working (try a ping..SMB,HTTP,etc)
IF it is ..the command should mount an SMB share
IF it is ..the command should mount an SMB share

Re: How to remotely mount drive in file system?
Failed to Mount NAS - operation permitted for root only
so i am guessing that unlike my internal mount i need to add a username and password of some sort. i wonder where i find them?
theree seems to be a suggestion that nfs is a bad idea or maybe doesnt have username and password? maybe i shoudl use cifs
//<NasIP>/<share> /media/pictures cifs credentials=/home/<user>/.credentials,rw,uid=1000,gid=1000,nounix,vers=1.0,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777,user,noauto 0 0
but there is no .credentials in my account folder. i wonder if i have to install cifs?

Re: How to remotely mount drive in file system?
I installed cif-utils
i got a username and password for my qnap
i set up a credentials file in /home/ubuntuusername/.smbcredentials
and tried it (many times) with sudo mount -a until i got credntials to work
and now i get bad UNC - my-No-ip-address:/Public
which turned out to be not having // before my noip address
next problem error could not resolve address for - mynoip address - whic i have checked and is correct - but mayb its set up wrong?

Re: How to remotely mount drive in file system?
NoIP is a DynDNS service, just so you can always find your IP (in case it changes dynamically) you need a service that updates the DynDNS, most routers have that builtin
Why would you do that ? .. makes no sense

Re: How to remotely mount drive in file system?
becasu i dont really know what these words mean - you could just as easily have said - what an idiot of course you need to port forwrd -- just as i think i had to when i was tryin g to set up QVPN - that needed port forwarding.
anyway
what do i have to do to fix 'bad UNC ' problem do you think?

Re: How to remotely mount drive in file system?
I see some weird disconnect here .. you use ubuntu as your OS but have such little grasp of inner workings. (not saying you need to be a linux wizard to run ubuntu.. but one would think a certain passion "for fiddling around yourself" would be inherent with this OS.)
So exactly what words are unknown ? Port forwards ?
The BAD UNC, I have no idea why you would connect your No-IP with any UNC path. The NoIP would only be used for your VPN connection. After that all connection paths would use private range IP's (e.g. 192.168.1.0/24)

Re: How to remotely mount drive in file system?
i moved to linux in 2007 as soon as i got photoshop and dreamweaver working - i use ububtu studio now with bitwig. I totally appriove of linux but i just want working desktop that does all i need. i am not a programmer and i know (see above) if i fiddle i break. so no, you dont have to be a nerd to be into linux. its more the politics of linux i like.
ok so i dont need a NOIP address.
so.. the config file came from qnap and already had the noip address in it (must be from an earlier attempt a few months ago) do i need ot change anything on the qnap
or just in the openvpn on the config file?
