I guess the mount command runs when network is still not available.
You can run the mount command as a system unit with a dependency to network, so mount is done after network is up and running.
There are a lot of tutorials in the web for that.
Unfortunately my links are all redirecting to German ubuntu forum ,
But I am rather sure you will find some in English or your native tongue .

Re: What are the steps to Mounting my QNAP 251 to a laptop over the internet
anooyingly now i am actaully away from home it is not working:
sudo mount -a
mount error(115): Operation now in progress
Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs) and kernel log messages (dmesg)
with my fstab saying :
\\192.168.0.17\Public /media/Files cifs credentials=/home/**ME**/.credentials,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777,noperm 0 0
maybe i am forgetting to do something? start my vpn?? how does my computer know where 192.168.0.17 is??
i suspect i am missing something important

well yeah..you wont be able to reach your lan without a vpn connection, so that would need establishing first

so, it should work if, while conneted to the internt i go to: edit connections> vpn connections > client 2 (that i set up before) and click it it should then make the connection.?
thats what i have to do.
so it is probably because the password box is blank.
but where did i get the password from?

Which password in which place?
You did install the NAS and setup the accounts, so YOU should know the passwords!?
Which vpn client software are you using? I dont know a software in which editing is mandatory for establishing a connection?
Editing means changing/modifying settings.
Or do you mean to list the connections and tab to one to activate?
Please describe in more details.

Re: What are the steps to Mounting my QNAP 251 to a laptop over the internet
hi.
when i click on the intenet icon on my laptop > drop down appears >vpn connections > i click on client 2 - and it tries to connect and fails.
i thought maybe that happened becasue when i click edit the password box was blank??
either way, the vpn connection fails and i cant mount-a my drive.
there doesnt seem to be much i can do about this but start again when i get home. the Qmanager app on my phone does not seem to work from outside.
