Slow NFS but fast CIFS

Post by paulo.meireles »

I just bought a used TS-431P. It's been reset to factory defaults and updated to firmware 4.5.4.1715. It has four 4TB WD Purple HDDs in RAID6.
Created two NFS shares for my VMware ESXi 6.5 lab servers - one for NFS 3 and one for NFS 4.1 - and disabled write caching as recommended.
However, on any one of them I only get around 11MB/s. I tried copying some files from my Windows 10 PC (through NFS 3) but also got 11MB/s.
However, when I access the exact same share through CIFS from my PC, I get an inconsistent (but good) speed from 65MB/s to over 85MB/s.
I checked the switch, VMware servers and the NAS, and all is at 1Gb/s. If it was not, my Win10 PC couldn't have reached 85MB/s through CIFS.
Any clue on what's going on? Why is NFS this much slower than CIFS?
