TS-831X + 4x 8TB Iron wolf pro - high temperature

Post by TheLandofFey »

Hello everybody,

just installed TS-831 8G with 4x 8TB Iron wolf pro and registered drive temperatures about 50°. (46 -50) even when idle.
Installed 2 WD Red 3TB in slot 7+8 which only have 34°.

Is i remember everything over 50 is critical (even though Seagate says 60° in Iron wolf pro technical specs)

Also my speed is not as expected. Have the drives in RAID 10 and don't get well over 50/MBits over Ethernet. Try 10Gbe on Monday.

Any comment on this?

Thx for help and time

Maybe "just installed" means that they are still synchronizing the RAID array?

Yes that's normal.

Measured exactly how, with what and are you talking about Mbits/sec or MBytes/sec?
RAID have never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups on a different system (preferably placed at another site), you will eventually lose data!

A non-RAID configuration (including RAID 0, which isn't really RAID) with a backup on a separate media protects your data far better than any RAID-volume without backup.

All data storage consists of both the primary storage and the backups. It's your money and your data, spend the storage budget wisely or pay with your data!

Thank you for your quick answer.

Installed means everything is done. RAID is synched and all settings are done.

You thought right - I misstyped - 50 MB/sec. - not MBit of course.

I found that temperature is much better when fan set manual to MAX ( about 33° to 35°) or MIDDLE (40°,39°39°,38°) Slot 1-4
(It is kinda warm last days so room is about 25° normally it is much colder there)

But then the NAS is kinda loud

Speed tested with different tools on Mac and Windows and practical tests. Read/write different files manually.

Testing is best done copying a single large file to and from the NAS.

What does the network configuration look like in the NAS?

What network equipment is in between the client and the NAS?

just a quick side question

why raid10 and not raid6 ? (same capacity and better redundancy)

@dolbyman: My 'expert' told me Raid 10 is safer and faster. I ask him for details, but I think, there are many here, to confirm or discuss that :)

@P3R: Just both clients connected to a gigabit switch for testing.
NAS Network config?
Just IP and SMB - everything else standard setup.
Tested from IMAC again with Blackmagic Test (5GB Filesize) - 39MB/sek. So every test is the same speed.

What does the NAS admin interface, System Settings, Resource Monitor report about CPU and Memory usage during a test?

safer definitely not ..at least not on 4 drives

on a raw speed limited device like yours ..and on 10GbE ..maybe a little bit faster ..not much

So now the not so important topic became the main topic :-)

But the old question is: No chance to have a "smart" Fan control the Drive temperature? System is at 33° so fans are low - even when drives go up @ >50°??

I am fine with RAID 10 Speed.
Reconfigured network and cables. Now I have good speed when transfering big files over 1Gbe and 10Gbe. Just normal file copy is still kinda slow. Maybe SSD Cache will cover that. Test it tomorrow.

I get about:

350 MB/s Write (Nvme SSD to NAS)
445 MB/s Read (from NAS)
