Exos x16 not spinning down but high load cycle count

Post by HTP_ProXy »

Hello community,

I bought a TVS-1282 two weeks ago and installed two Samsung SSDs for QTS and four Exos x16 drives in RAID 5 for my data. Sadly the drives never seem to spin down. Instead I can hear some clicking sounds every few seconds from all drives. This also happens when nothing is accessing the drives, all services disabled and the network connector unplugged.

After checking the SMART values of the drives I saw some quite high values for load cycle count. Each drive has a value of 300+ with 200 hours used. This seemed strange so I decided to contact the Seagate support. Today I got a call and I was told that clicking noises even when idle are not unusual and the load cycle count is not an important factor for the health of the drives.

What do you think about this?

high load cycle counts were an issue for WD green drives (increasing due to frequent head parking) lowering the lifespan of the drives .. if seagate says that that is not an issue on these drives, you would have to believe them I guess
