Seagate Backup Plus Portable as EXTERNAL USB drive

My understanding is this unit is preformatted exFAT (labeled as MAC+Windows)- brand new 5TB.
So I chose in QNAP "External Storage" UI page to format it as NTFS.
It is to be used as an airgap backup for a specific folder on the QNAP and some Windows PCs.

It's still at "Disk Initializing, please wait" after at least 12 hours.
I can feel the disk spinning vibrations and the LED is lit solid.

How long do I wait before concluding it's stuck ?
Could it be an erroneous message - see it shows up with some info at upper right (see picture) but it also states there on hovering "the volume cannot be mounted or recognized"
Can the QNAP normally handle formatting these or should I have done it in Windows?

it's an empty drive .. not much you can break

just yank it and try formatting it to NTFS in a windows machine

the QNAP hadn't done anything to it, hadn't even started by deleting the original Seagate files!
One of which was oddly named MAC centric file, may have had something to do with it: ._ยท
I simply did a quick format in Windows - took all of 30 seconds or so!
Popped it back into the QNAP and it's recognized as expected.
