Hi !

I use (in a TS 509 / 4.2.6) several Seagate ST8000VN0022 without any problem in months. I receveid two ST8000VN004 in a week, none of them even start ! They won't show up on the NAS !

Is there any known issue or am I really unlucky !?

Sadly, you have run out of luck.

The TS-509 Pro officially do not support hard drives larger than 2TB. You were lucky enough to have a unit that is capable of using 4TB drives.

I have two TS-509 Pro units, both of which do not support drives larger than 2TB.

As I have been upgrading my other units, I tried swapping in 4TB, 8TB and 10TB disks, none of which are recognized by QTS. There is a hardware limitation with the SATA controller and larger hard drives. I even booted DSL (Damn Small Linux) from a usb memory stick and DSL was not able to see the larger hard drives.

Thanks for your answer !

Somehow, I feel lucky as I have 5x Seagate ST4000DM000 ! These are 4TB disks and I have been using them in a ~15TB RAID5 volume without any problem for years. During last months, I have started to replace these disks by ST8000VN0022 with no issue ! Today, I have 3 x 8T disks (and 2 old 4TB still in place). My TS-509 displays the good capacity (OK, my RAID5 is still 15TB, but I guess it's because of the "old" 4TB).

I have tested my new ST8000VN004 on a linux desktop : same issue, so maybe I am really unlucky with these devices.

However, without any doubt, my TS-509 Pro supports 4TB disks ! And I am confident for 8TB (at least with ST8000VN0022) !

Sincerely
