Seagate Compatability - WHAT? SHUCKS, I Just found Out About This!

Post by Username-007 »

Weird title I know - just don't know what to title this with.

I'm new to this. Got the Qnap ts-251D and now was waiting for NAS drives to go on sale (apparently a rare event!). I found that Newegg has the Ironwolf 8TB (ST8000VN0022) on sale for $180 each. Was going to pull the trigger when I found I need to get a "compatible" drive for my NAS. Stupid me - I thought a NAS drive was a NAS drive and would work no matter what kind/size I got. So I guess I have to wait a bit longer until something compatible comes up.

Anyway, this leads to my question. I hear people are shucking the Easystore from BestBuy and using them in their NAS's. How would you know if they are compatible? I've read a bunch of threads on shucking but not once did anyone bring up a statement about them being compatible with various NAS's. What am I missing (if anything)?

Where did you see that that drive is incompatible?

Incompatible would be:
- Weird pin outs (unsupported by the qnap)
- SMR (incompatible with time critical random writes)
- Excessive head parking (Green drives)
- non TLER (drives will try to fix errors and get kicked out)

Shucked drives can work, but nothing guarantees what drive you get (CMR,SMR) and what features have been disabled via firmware

some people swear by shucking due to their price value. it may even be possible to claim warranty.

the people over at this subreddit can tell u how reliable these shucked drives are

also when shucking, your basically playing the lottery :'

Qnap has a compatibility page: https://www.qnap.com/en/compatibility/? ... category=1

This is not making sense to me at all. For kicks, I just went to Amazon and punched in WD Red 4TB (WD40EFRX) and the 8TB (WD80EFAX) that apparently share 21k reviews. Neither is on the compatibility page? What gives here? What am I missing? It would seem a "standard" NAS drive that so many others are using would be compatible.

I'm having second thoughts about getting this NAS!

that list is tested drives..that does not mean that qnap tests every new variation with every NAS on their website

there is also compatible UPS units that are not on the list (etc)

Okay (and forgive if a stupid question) so based on your first response, I'm way over analyzing this! Your saying any of these "standard" NAS drives should definitely work?

And ... I'm going to say THANKS now as I got to go to bed!
