Question on the way to RMA a HDD

Post by 838Joel »

Hi,

I purchase this drive less than a year ago (16Tb Ironwolf Pro). Last week I had a warning about this drive in one of my array.

Hardware status: Disk 4 Medium error - Run a bad block scan on the drive. Replace the drive if error persists.

I ran a complete test and got this: Fatal or unknown error

So the smart info give:
ID 197: current pending sector in warning
ID 198: Uncorrectable sector count in warning

Both with raw value of 8 (which is above the normal threshold of 0)

I will RMA this drive with Seagate directly since it's over the 30 days from my supplier.

Question is how do I properly RMA it?
1- Just pull out the drive from the array? (hopefully I'm in Raid6 and safe for another failure until I receive the replacement)
2- Should I bother erasing any content on the drive? Or this is useless and no data can be read from only 1 drive out of an array of 8 drive!

Any more advise you are more then welcome!

Thanks,
Joel

The is only swiss cheese data chunks on it

The system partitions could have program data on it ...all raid1 mirrored

and nobody will care about your data over there anyways...
