WD RED 10 TB disk

Post by jacobmarner »

I just bought a brand new WD Red 10 TB disk (WD100EFAX - production day June 20th 2017) for by QNAP TS-451+ but it does not work. It spins up and sees the drive but after 9 seconds it just spins down again a reports "Host: Disk 4 unplugged" and the HDD led light goes out.

This drive is on the official compatibility list, so I guess it should work.

Has anybody any experience with the WD Red 10 TB disks on this NAS? After all, those drives are pretty new.

Could my disk be broken or could it be a firmware incompatibility?

Yes it does. The NAS has 3 other HDDs in it already. The 10 TB disk is put in Bay 4 - hence the error message.

And it also runs fine with the new disk in it - the NAS just can see the disk - after the initial 9 seconds. I am guessing it
is not recognized somehow.

Example log:
Type Date Time Users Source IP Computer name Content
Error 2017/08/25 19:44:01 System 127.0.0.1 localhost Host: Disk 4 unplugged.
Information 2017/08/25 19:43:52 System 127.0.0.1 localhost Host: Disk 4 plugged in.

I also tried swapping to other disk-bays - this make no difference.

So my current guess is either 1. The disk is broken or 2. The NAS does not support it.

Maybe the disk firmware is newer than what is supported by the NAS?
The disk is spinning up in that short period so it doesn't *sound* broken.

What firmware are you running?
Use the forum search feature before posting.

Use RAID and external backups. RAID will protect you from disk failure, keep your system running, and data accessible while the disk is replaced, and the RAID rebuilt. Backups will allow you to recover data that is lost or corrupted, or from system failure. One does not replace the other.

NAS: TVS-882BR | F/W: 5.0.1.2346 | 40GB | 2 x 1TB M.2 SATA RAID 1 (System/VMs) | 3 x 1TB M.2 NMVe QM2-4P-384A RAID 5 (cache) | 5 x 14TB Exos HDD RAID 6 (Data) | 1 x Blu-ray

Can anybody here comfirm that they have a WD Red 10 TB disk running on their NAS? And if so, what model NAS do you have?

A followup.

I did multiple tests on the drive on multiple workstations and concluded the drive was faulty.

I got it replaced at the vendor for a identical one.

This one works fine. I am now a happy man.
