Two new WD80EFAX added to a TS-835A give ERROR

Post by JorgeM »

QNAP TS-835A 4.3.5.0760 Build 20181114 with 2 x WD80EFZX bays 1 & 2 in Raid 1, working fine. I installed 2 new Western Digital WD80EFAX bays 3 & 4.

After inserting the new disks the old ones still work fine (even after rebooting), but the new ones show red status.

Attached is the status of the four disks (Because of attachments limitation, Disk 2 was not uploaded, but its data is the same as Disk 1). I refuse to think both new disks are bad.

Help from the forum appreciated.

when you bought those, were they factory sealed new and unused hdds? :'

you can always pull it out and hook it to a pc desktop and run the brand vendor's own smart test to cross check results, if you don't believe the qnap assessment.

and then IF it shows a positive, then it most likely is true....

the next step is the RMA procedure to get your replacement

if you check the wd site there should be something for how to do the RMA.

Thanks Moogle

Both are new and factory sealed.

Now trying to find a Windows box to run that test :?

Do you know of any other test I can run from the SSH console?

Take care

oo this part i don't know. i only know the bare basics unfortunately :(

i did see a tutorial on the wd faq site about running their diagnostic tool using dos or something. but for me windows is just simple since it has a gui :)

rather unfortunate what happened to you :(

looking at the forum in the past, i noticed others also sometimes got bad new drives. Hasn't happened to me yet (guess i got lucky 8) )

When my hdd needed replacing (a hdd dropped out of raid), my NAS was running in raid5 degraded mode (meaning if 1 more hdd had failed, i would lose everything if i did not get the new replacement soon and something went wrong before then). but even in that dire situation, i had a backup. So hopefully you got backup

if it's any consolation, from what i read, the WD rma process is much more lenient compared to other brands (which i'm leaning to, now that hgst got bought out by wd). just need some patience and follow through with the steps for it.

u too take care buddy :)
