TS-431P2 & resonance

Post by loekf »

Got a TS-431P2 couple of months ago, but frankly the plastic housing is/was driving me crazy.

Looks like the harddisks cause resonance (vibrations), which the plastic housing doesn't cope with well. I think people have complained
before about the plastic carriers QNAP is using now.

I now seem to have fixed it by:

- Sticking DVD anti-vibration stickers (silicon) on each side of the drive, this barely fits in the carrier.
- Adding an extra screw on both sides.

To start with QNAP should sell these things with extra screws to fit the HDDs.

Maybe it's the WD Red Pro drives. In my old NAS I had WD Reds.
QNAP TS-451 (4 GB) : 4 x 4TB WD40EFRX Red configured as RAID5 [QTS 4.4.1 Build1081]
QNAP TS-128A : 1TB WD10EFRX Red [QTS 4.4.1 Build1086]

Never had this effect with the 4TB WD Reds. Noticed it with the larger 10TB ones in the TS 1635AX, but just using screws to mount them, fixed it for me.
