I need to increase my storage capacity on my TS-453A. I am using 4-8TB drives today. What is the largest hard drive this unit will support? Second question, does it make sense to use larger drives in a TS-453A or look at a newer QNAP to replace my old one?
Thanks in advance for your help!!

There is no HDD size limit on CAT2 units, just watch your maximum volume size (depends on your inode size)

Only you can decide what you want to spend
If your current unit performs adequately, IMO, it would be better to simply upgrade the drives. Having said that, it also depends on your current backup strategy. A second (or 5th or 6th) NAS can come in handy.
