Hi All,
So I am trying to make it so my Plex server does not transcode. This Qnap just can not handle it while trying to stream.
I made two mkv files from a couple of my Blu-rays.
1) The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug (1080p/27mps/DCA 5.1)
2) Batman Returns (1080p/16MPS/TrueHD 5.1)
The Hobbit streams fine, sounds and looks. Batman skips and buffers while I transcodes. In the stream information, the video is doing a copy, but the video is transcoding. Any idea as to why? I figured it it could handle a 27mps, the 16 wouldn't transocde. So I am using "original" format on my Plex client. I see this issue with both my main client, Roku 4, and my windows machine which I used for test.

Re: Plex and Transcoding on TS-451
apparently a big issue for many, because it is a client request to the server, so if the client cannot request the untouched file, the Plex server transcodes it.

Re: Plex and Transcoding on TS-451
I have looked there some. No real answers so far.
What I find strange is that I tried Zootopia at 30mps and it works fine (no transcoding)
I would think if set it to original, it will just give it.

So I think it has something to do with VC1 and playing it on a Roku. How can I transcode my VC1 mkv file into something like mpeg4?

What options would I do to do that? It takes a long time to use handbrake so I want to make sure I can get it right without trying 10 times.

Re: Plex and Transcoding on TS-451
you will have to experiment as it may well be different for each file depending how its encoded in the first place
looking at your batman video it could be the true hd that is not supported by the client and needs to be trans coded even if the video does not and as its all one file then the new audio has to be mixed into the new file and may account for the choppy playback
