Need Help In Setting Up Hardware Transcoding During DVR

Post by aesculus »

I have a TS-453B and a Plex Pass. I thought I had HW Transcoding working before but new DVR shows take a 1/2 to transcode for a 2 hour show now with the CPU pegged. Not sure what I have messed up.

I looked at the server settings and HW Transcoding is still checked.

Any other thoughts on why it is not using HW transcoding and what I might be able to do to debug this?

What Plex version are you running? Make sure and download the latest version direct from Plex.tv and install that manually.

Version 1.16.6.1592

Also when I open the web interface via the QNAP App area and select Settings I don't get the normal list of Device Server Web Users

It goes directly to PlexServerName - General.

Plex pass + latest plex + you configured plex settings for hardware accelerated transcoding.

if don't work, then the issue is probably the plex app.

You need to consult the plex sub forum for QNAP and ask the developers there to look at it.

Since your a plex pass user, don't they have some sort of customer service ?

Update: An nice user on the Plex forums helped me confirm that during playback, the system is using HW transcoding.

My problem is that when a TV-DVR show is being recorded, it's killing the QNAP. I am not sure if HW transcoding is being applied here or not, nor do I have a way to tell if it is.

A bit more information as to my issue and more work I have to do:
The transcoding issue occurred again last night. Again a 2 hour program that took an additional half hour to finish transcoding of the original content. Early in the evening other shows finished immediately.

But here is what I discovered:

* The problem show was broadcast in 1080i. When transcoding is finished the file shows it as being 1080P.
* This recording had the system CPU at 90%+ and the Plex portion at 85%+
* The shows that transcoded immediately were broadcast at 720P.
* These shows had the CPU around 60% and the Plex portion around 50%

I am not sure what I can do to have Plex not transcode to progressive from interlaced, or if that is even an option. I also think that the 1080 transcoding just gets further and further behind so when the show ends it takes a while to complete. The 720P shows are available immediately.
