ES1686dc is *NOT* active-active

Post by Storever »

All of the marketing material for this device claims that this is an active-active controller configuration. Unfortunately what they mean is not what is normally understood by that term.

When creating a shared folder you must select controller A or controller B. The share is then only accessible on that controller except in the case of a controller failure, at which point all shares will (theoretically) be available on the controller that remains up.

In other words you have to carefully plan and balance shares between the controllers in order to ensure performance.

Normally, in an active-active controller scenario we would assign both controller IP addresses to the same DNS hostname and allow round-robin to take care of this load balancing. Not possible with this product.

Hopefully this info helps someone who may be considering purchasing one.
