for the qnap you can either set it up in qts using the QVPN app, or on your router. I only tested the former method using openvpn so far.

other than using VPN to connect the QNAP to another client device remotely over the internet securely, you can also use VPN for IP anonymity like using PrivateInternetAccess VPN client for example, then in QVPN set it as the gateway your QNAP. there is probly some other different settings you can do like point the PIA VPN to download station only etc.
