I'm inclined to answer that question, but I think we already know it. ;)

@34:52 he runs pihole on the qnap. is that recommended?

I'm already using pfblocker running on my pfsense router so pihole is not needed for me. but still interesting to know about.

fyi i copy pasted the title. if i were in marketing, i would steer clear of questions you don't want answered :' just a thought. not sure why they decided on that phrasing

Too bad there are no Vegas bets about QNAP and security, QNAP not getting security right is probably the surest bet there is currently.

Don't hold your breath on this one. QTS is just a cluster-eff of an operating environment. QTS needs a complete architecture overhaul and re-write. Sadly, QNAP seems to be going the obfuscation direction by using binary blobs. That is effectively security by obscurity. Security researchers are not going to take the time to decompile and reverse engineer the blobs to look for vulnerabilities (as is currently done with PHP code) but I suspect malware producers will actively pursue the binary blob route because they know there will be fewer eyes on the blobs, and once an exploit is found, the nature of the exploit will be far more difficult to determine - which can result in a far more effective exploit campaign.

My next NAS won’t be a QNAP. Most likely a TrueNAS based unit. If it could easily repurpose my existing QNAP by installing FreeNAS, I would.

I think I am done with QNAP as well.

I purchased an Asustor a couple of days ago, and have been playing around with it for the past 24 hours or so. There are some minor things that are kinda meh! but overall I like what I see so far.

I just have zero faith in QNAP coding practices, and even though I am a coder and a hacker (software & hardware), I still find I spend much more time than I should be, putzing around with innards of QTS. I can't even begin to imagine how frustrated and overwhelmed the less technical average user must feel.

Well at least QNAP is more "upfront" with security news these days.
The last couple of ransomware attacks were met with complete silence from QNAP. You would think they would swarm the forums/reddit etc for information and to put "minds at ease" .. nope .. crickets

Honestly, I don't think anyone at QNAP even has a real clue as to what is happening, this appears to be a typical "deer caught in the headlights" reaction.

QNAPS coding practices over the past couple of years has been been circling the drain, and now we have confirmation that it has gone down the sewer! Hard coded credentials - in 2021????

That shizz went out of styre back in 2001.
