PC rig for your network? showcase your builds (share tips)

Post by Moogle Stiltzkin »

I'm doing a major upgrade for my Pc system, cause i've been using an intel ivy bridge for a long time now and suspect there is some issue since i get stuck at 100% cpu from time to time (yes i checked for viruses but couldn't find anything). Not to mention need a new system to run the new windows 11.

So this is what i came up with after doing my own research 8) *made some mistakes here and there, but nothing too fatal. so don't necessarily copy my build if you plan to build your own. learn from my mistakes and choose better. not to mention your budget and requirements may differ from mine
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/nBpLvf

AMD RYZEN 5 5600X *might not be the best performer or even the best bang for buck in 2021. but it's good enuff for me in terms of performance, value and just doing what i need it to do. But before you run out and get this, probly check out Jay's video, cause the Intel may have a very competitive option for this. that said why i went with amd is because i want to support amd, also it has a lower TDP compared to the Intel. another consideration is, can you wait for 2022 for the next ryzen gen? food for thought

ASUS ROG STRIX X570-E Gaming Wifi II *almost went with a b550, but ended up going for this because it had some features i needed that the b550s didn't offer sadly (although it did come close. and performance wise b550 doesn't have an issue unless u really need pcie 4 support). Also this board is a revision 2 of the original. The main difference is they removed the motherboard active fan cooler because the new chipset does not require it and so it was replaced with passive cooling (1 less part to worry about possible failure), also some features that were reserved for crosshair extreme and dark hero were now also included to the Strix revision 2. This rev just recently came out, so if you do order this board, make sure they are sending you the updated revision that comes with more polished features (for the same price). it's so new that i could not find much reviews on this revision 2 board out  i was so worried that the online retailer send me rev1, but after some clarification, he sent revision 2, phew :D

1080 gtx graphics card (graphics card prices right now are insane. so i don't mind using a perfectly working graphics. I only play and watch on 1080p 24'' monitor anyway, so i don't need the best)

G.SKILL Trident Z Neo DDR4 Desktop RAM | Dual Channel Kit | 3600MHz (F4-3600C18D-32GTZN) *may have been fine going for a 3200mMHz cl16 but this was recommended
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phon8PJf-6w

Scythe Fuma 2 (i got this because of the questionable results with the mugen 5 black. Also this is the recommendation by a credible reviewer. Another reason is because out of most of the candidates this is probably one of the most silent ones of the lot)

Scythe Mugen 5 BLACK Edition (SCMG-5100BE)   *almost got a noctua but i was convinced this was just as good

*update
If you want to nitpick seems like there is some criticism for this cpu cooler. almost 10c extra temp difference because of the black paint they used? thats not good optics

Fractal Design Torrent Black TG Light Tint FD-C-TOR1A-01 *lots of reviewers were impressed by this case, also i really appreciate the fractal teams ethiques by doing a recall in regards to their hub issue on a timely and transparent manner. not only do i get to support a company the right thing, i also get a good case in the process

Seagate Ironwolf NAS 8TB sata HDD (download stuff here. almost went with a 4tb. perhaps could have saved money and gone with a desktop model and set it to spin down on idle, but i rather spend a bit more on a more reliable drive)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKQhTgsYsM4

Crucial P5 Plus M.2 NVMe SSD 2tb (the hynix no stock. So i got this instead. It's probly not the best in it's category, but it was what was available and it was within my budget. the SK hynix Gold p31 is recommended if you are planning on using for systems that require more power efficiency like a laptop or something along those lines)
https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/cr ... ssd-review
SK hynix Gold P31 2tb (for OS and games. it's not a gen4 ssd, but it's good enuff for me. I made the rounds before deciding to get this brand, because there were just way too many ssd brands scamming people, so i only stumbled on this one that seemed decent and without any recent drama on a similar rug pull situation *for now)
Seasonic Focus+ 650 PSU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_AsgmofY8Q

*almost ordered a Gigabyte M27Q, because it's a very nice budget gaming ips monitor, but i'm not too fussy on this. so maybe next time. but if someone is looking for a monitor with good value, this is my recommendation. So i'm just reusing my existing monitor which i'm perfectly ok with.

this new system has 2.5gbe but i don't have a switch beyond 1gbe. but at least my pc is not the bottleneck. bit by bit i can move to higher than 1gbe eventually for my networking :) May consider a 10gbe addon card in future if i do get a 10gbe switch eventually.

With this new case, i have a plethora of I/Os incombination with motherboard. For example there is a usb type c header which i can connect to the case front side which is neat.

you can see the case review here, (lots of the reviewers luv this case and i did also. but what i liked about it besides the looks is the dust filters, and easy to maintain it compared to what i already have)

Code: Select all

https://youtu.be/dsc6DBkk97o

So this system i feel should work quite well for my qnap networking needs :)

but bottomline, if you plan to buy a new rig this year, check this video since it's the main deciding factor if you should go AMD or Intel, based on the results and other considerations

Care to share your builds? and any commentary what components is helping you out the most.

PS: if your planning to get a new system, you can wait for the upcoming ryzen out next year? but thats using ddr5 (30% more expensive than ddr4 for little gain), and as supply is getting tighter and tigher maybe costs for components is just gonna keep going up (my speculation). the new chip factories being built won't be ready until a few years time so.... :S the signs are here. when i tried to order ram, i was told by the shop the supplier doesn't know when they'll get stock. and another that did, had a 8 weeks waiting time  so i ended ordering online for instant shipping (since luckily they had 2 pieces left  ....)

yeh but i thought id just start a thread for what pc system people using for their networks ^^ for a change..... u have your nas, your switches, your router, then on the other end of things, you have your pc. so what pc system will work on that side of things is the angle im approaching from this for nas related :D and while on the subject, may as well go for a full build share for anyone looking to build a new system in 2021, so thought i'd share my own build 8)

after all u need a pc rig to access stuff on your network (not precisely, since any device that can access the network like your smartphone, tablet can as well usually via wifi. but the thread is focused on desktop pc side of things) and the appropriate components whether ur doing 1gbe, 2.5gbe, 10gbe, or whatever. so what do u need for that on the pc side.

10gbe networking, probly ssd? and an addon card :'

Take this for example
https://www.reddit.com/r/homelab/commen ... 10gbe_hdd/
SufficientDare

Even if the Network itself is technically faster than most SSDs (assuming you're talking about mostly consumer-graded SSDs with an average speed of around 500 mB/s), I'd take the SSDs.

The HDDs are always slower, because they can't read/write data at 10Gb speed. All your data is transfering at 10Gb speed to your server, but the bottleneck are the HDDs then writing much much slower.

10Gb network is nice on the long run, but getting SSDs is more important to start with, in my opinion.

so when building a pc rig with those (networking) and other usage (gaming, or general) in mind, what is everyone using i wondered for ideas 8)

for motherboard, most are coming out with 2.5gbe these days, but there are some premium boards that do come with 10gbe inbuilt such as this one

Asus ROG Crosshair Extreme (this is an interesting board that came with both 2.5gbe and 10gbe ports on it)
https://youtu.be/cvwZvWpum5o

https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/as ... ii-extreme

but i figured that a 10gbe addon is better in the sense that if you upgrade your system, you won't be forced to look solely for a 10gbe mobo, instead you can install the addon card.

something like this would be good
QM2-2P10G1TB
2 x PCIe Gen3 NVMe SSD & 1 x 10GbE port expansion card to enhance performance

or if you don't need the extra ssd slots, there is this
QNAP QXG-10G1T Single-Port (10Gbase-T) 10GbE

Another thing that mobo has too is thunderbolt is you need that for your QNAP. Thunderbolt on an AMD.... we r finally here  *let that sink in

i don't have any good references for what to shop in regards to the networking component part for the pc (to be used for a QNAP NAS), so if u have one you can recommend, feel free to share here. some of the components like the 10gbe addon card, qnap sells those.
*update

Mike had an interesting video where he uses the QNAP 5GbE usb Adapter to connect the NAS directly to his pc, WHILE at the same time, having the ethernet port connect to the switch as per usual. What this configuration does is, provide a faster connection to your desktop pc directly from the NAS, while still providing the usual 1gbe on the switch to the rest of your devices the network. This is if you don't have a switch that is better than a 1gbe to take advantage of, and you only need high performance speed to your main desktop pc which is situated in range of your NAS, then ya, you can do it this way :D

https://youtu.be/u9mQ69YiZAg

hm
USB 3.0 Type-C to 5GbE Adapter (QNA-UC5G1T) $89

QNAP QXG-10G1T Single-Port (10Gbase-T) 10GbE Network Expansion Card, PCIe Gen3 X4, Low-Profile Bracket Pre-Loaded, Low-Profile Flat and Full-Height Brackets are Included $109
i prefer the pcie addon card with 10gbe port, because of better performance for not much extra in price. That said, if you plan to connect a laptop to the NAS, then your more likely to be using the 5gbe usb adapter instead for that configuration. Another barrier for the pcie adapter 10gbe is whether your QNAP nas has a 10gbe port to begin with, if not then you may need to also purchase another addon card for it (assuming the model supports it). But if your qnap already had a 10gbe, then no issue there.

if anyone is planning to get a similar motherboard, there are now the passive revisions using the new chipset that doesn't require a fan cooler for the chip.

e.g. ASUS ROG STRIX X570-E Gaming WIFI II (also refered to as revision 2 for the original)

Post by Moogle Stiltzkin »

for the network side of things i found this which summarized what you need basically

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cDEdjDGP8w

But for QNAP related, they offer the switches, and the pcie addon card to provide for the 10gbe port (for either your PC and also your NAS if it supports addons). For routers, i'm a fan of pfsense, but if you want a simpler setup, then there is a qnap router offering for this, but i never tried it so i don't know how well it fares. for wifi, i like using the unifi ap since i can then manage it using unifi controller running from the QNAP QPKG app hosted locally :D

a switch like this looks interesting QNAP QSW-2104-2T, but it's unmanaged though. but if all you need is 10gbe and 2.5gbe, it has it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9fExek6XRo

*update

for those looking for a performant gaming pc with a decent budget, then this is a good recommendation

*update so apparently there are ddr4 mobos for the z690, so maybe that could be the way to go? :' due to DDR5 prices being insane also hard to find stock. the only thing thing of major concern though that is that denuvo game compatibility for alder lake :'
Gigabyte z690 ud ax paired with a I5 12600k for a similar price to the Ryzen 5600x i got with an Asus Strix gaming-E wifi II motherboard (i spotted a combo deal where you get the cpu + motherboard together). cost wise though, the ddr5 ram will cost more and probly not be as good as ddr4 right now. And there are some quirks in windows 11 for Intel Alder lake going on right now, something to be mindful of (specifically to do with gaming and DRM support). This gigabyte motherboard may not be the highest end but it has pretty much all you need (including even the type c header which i was looking for my pc case). Also the Intel has more cores and threads than the Ryzen, so credits where credits due. So while a ryzen 5600x recommendation may have been fine at the tail end of 2020, in 2021 right now, seems the Intel had the lead in the bang for bucks category (at least for now).
Hope that helps if you r looking to get a new pc system right now. Or if you can be patient wait for the new ryzen out in 2022. What worries me though is waiting longer, how much more expensive will these pc component prices increase? because looking at the news and other indicators seems like the situation will get worse (especially DDR5 for which the components to make these are costlier compared to DDR4....)
