ZFS Memory Limit

Post by Cbrad01 »

Not sure where to post this question.
Can you limit how much memory the system will use for the ZFS caches?
I decided to switch my NAS to Hero to start using the new file system, thinking it would be an improvement. My issue is that my NAS has 128 GB of RAM and over a few days the caches will use all of the RAM to the point that the OS starts to disable container station, virtualization station, plex and so on because the system runs out of memory.
I get the following error
Warning 2021-12-03 07:49:33 System 127.0.0.1 Hardware Status Kernel [Hardware Status] NAS out of memory. Started kill process: xxxxx
Listing what apps it has killed. In the end the only apps left running are the core OTB apps.
Any insight, thoughts?

Sounds very familiar…

Is QTS (hero) 5.0 really out of Beta? Be VERY careful!;

I didn’t see that post but it’s close to what I ams seeing. I can’t understand how the cache can be using almost 100 GBs RAM. I have started reading about ZFS and it seems there as ways to limit the cache size, just can’t seem to find any details on how QNAP is doing it.

I'm having the exact same issue. I've been really disappointed with the reliability of the nas after recent updates. The system saying it's running out of SWAP space since ZFS ARC is using all memory in my new 64GB QNAP NAS (TVS-872X).

Well I have heard back from QNAP. They have sent me a new firmware to try that is supposed to fix the error. Downloaded the firmware but have not loaded it it yet. Kinda scared to move forward.
NAS is unstable now, will the firmware fix it? Or will it make it worse?

The new firmware seems to have corrected the OOM problem. NAS has been running great underload for the last few days.

The latest firmware released for download on the QNAP site has the fix and allows you to set the ZFS limit.
