with my new motherboard i have wifi 6e. but i don't have any wifi 6e router yet :( at the time there was no stock of unifi ap wifi6. so i got the older ap lite ac model.

seems qnap has an all in one router with wifi 6 (not sure if its wifi 6 or 6e)

this? i'm guessing it comes with wifi 6e? yeah it looks good

only reason i didn't get another asus (like last time) for router, is because i wanted to go down the pfsense route. But there is no AIO where the router comes with the wifi combined for this build, so had to slap on a separate wireless access point for that.

Only a handful of devices have 6e..the ax86u is not one of them

If you need better wireless then why not get wireless access point(s) rather than replacing a perfectly good router.

Spile is correct. Your UniFi router is great. Just get the better access points. And I know - UniFi is not offering 6E yet. But as soon as they do (or as soon as you buy something) -
then the "next thing" will be announced, and you will say "damn - I just bought this 6E access point, and now there is something new and faster".
It will be like this until the day we die (and continue long after we all die !).

me?

i was using an ac68u for a long time. it's life got extended quite a long while, thx to devs like rtmerlin and third party firmware (couldn't rely on asus for security compared to rt merlin, go figure  )

i wanted a new router because old one had a defect where it kept overheating when kept on for long periods of time. it got so bad to the point that performance was impacted, and also that the network would just cut. it was that bad.

so after doing research, i wanted to try out a pfsense solution. did so with the qnap (TBS-453dx) nas virtualization pfsense, just so i could learn understand more about how pfsense works and whether i could manage it before i purchased one.

i really liked it so i went with a qotom (and since it's from china, obviously i wiped it first and reinstall pfsense  ). But this setup does not come with a wifi (well you can get a wifi addon, but i read they have rubbish performance).

As for wifi ap, at the time i wanted to try out ubiquiti because people kept saying it was a great product so i wanted to try it out since i never used this brand before. And sadly the newer wifi 6 model was brand new and out of stock. Only ones i could get in my locality was the wireless ac version of the ap lite. So thats what i went with.

So thats the situation.

Anyway now motherboard is wifi 6e, so maybe down the road when i do get more devices with wifi 6/6e, or i come across a wifi ap/router i can then perform more tests using my new motherboard that does have wifi 6e ready, for benchmarking purposes.

Cauz i heard that wifi 6e could possibly outperform a 1gbe wired connection, so wondered if thats true or not :'
Besides the most obvious advantage of device mobility, where else does Wi-Fi 6 win where Ethernet falls short? The latest iteration of Wi-Fi connectivity has the ability to deliver faster speeds than Gigabit data transfer over wireless - presenting a huge advantage in the era of the smart home. When compared to WiFi 6, the standard Ethernet cables have - until now - provided the fastest form of Internet connectivity. For example, when you look at the theoretical top speed, Wi-Fi 6 reaches 9.6 Gbps (compared to Wi-Fi 5 which clocks in at 6.9 Gbps). In real world testing, Wi-Fi 6’s single stream speed has been raised to 1.2 Gbps - 20% faster than connecting via Gigabit Ethernet.

if we look at the real world testing by reviewers, not only does wifi 6e have a 20% faster speed advantage, but an easier time to be accessible to devices around the location it was installed. I did put in the effort to do ethernet wiring around the place, but it's expensive and time consuming. wifi is much easier to setup by comparison.
