Do You NEED Faster Ethernet?

tldr, yes. but if you want to go cheap, stick to 1gbe. if you want to splurge more there are 2.5gbe, 5gbe, 10gbe options, but you'll need to invest in making sure the sender and receiver over the network can benefit from these speeds to make the upgrade worth it (switches, client devices on network). identify all bottlenecks and upgrade accordingly.

I’m cheap, so I make-do with 1GbE. Works fine. :)

I just installed my first TS-h2490FU with twelve Micron 3.86 TB U.2 NVMe drives. Used the new QNAP QSW-M5216 25G switch and QNAP 25G cards (which are Mellanox SFP28 cards) in 3 Win 10 PC's. You get about 2200 MB/sec. Now THAT is fast ethernet.

i just bought 2 more seagate ironwolves 4tb non pros. so i can finally have 4 of them in raid5. i'm putting my old hgst deskstars into a box as a spare backup of last resort. i keep multiple backups :}

anyway.... speed on those backups are still 1gbe :{

maybe down the road if i can upgrade to a faster switch, then maybe i can get 2.5gbe speeds at least :/ cauz thats the minimum my desktop pc supports. unless i buy a 10gbe addon card for it to support faster switches.

but out of my nas only the tbs-453dx (10gbe) and the ts-253d 2.5gbe (or is it 5gbe? i forget). So for something like a ts-877 i'd have to also buy a 10gbe addon card as well :/

There is only one answer to this question, ever. It's the same answer as the one to "Do you need more storage space or memory (or money (or **))? The answer is, unfortunately, ALWAYS yes...
