SHOULD You Buy the Raspberry Pi 4 in 2022?

in short, no, not at these prices. not unless u have an urgent need for it.

why would u want a raspberry pi 4? well in the context for a qnap, u could use it to install pivpn to easily setup a secure vpn connection to your network to access the qnap remotely.

some guides for that here
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtUl7BfCNMY
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15VjDVCISj0
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4zlrc0F4NU

so what other options are there to setup vpn for remote access to your qnap? well if u already have a pfsense router, u could just setup vpn server based on this guide
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgielyUFGeQ

but if u insist on buying, u can find here

usually if i want to test another os, i use the qnap virtual station to experiment. though u can do some stuff with raspberry pi also similarly. i'm mostly interested in it for vpn remote access to run pivpn (which an auto update feature, and based on the guides, seems one of the easiest options for setting it up)

Yes you should but you need to be patient and/or be prepared to search the used market.
It depends on context though. For example The RPI is an excellent way to implement a vpn server if a vpn capable router is not an option.

55 usd for raspberry pi 4 b model 4gb ram, 75 usd for the 8gb ram model for MSRP.

i spotted one for 123 usd from the official reseller for local .... that seems to be roughly the current price atm. blame inflation and chip shortages, but if ur planning to get one this is probly u can expect right now.

i was looking again because i wanted to buy one for testing purposes with home assistant and other stuff :X

I like the esp32 for home automation projects and a LOT cheaper than the RPI4.

*i watched it already, but short answer is no. Raspberry pi is still king. because not only do you get the hardware, you also get the software and community support by many projects in this ecosystem.

To get the base prices you can go here *but they are out of stock

so at the right price, raspberry pi would be nice to go with your qnap nas (in my example use case, as a pivpn for remote access). even mice are getting in on it, i kid you not

Not a direct QNAP connection, but RaspPI is often mentioned as alternative VPN server..granted without that context, the quasi monolog about it, feels out of place.

As long as it has some connection to other forum discussions, I tend to let ot slide.
