I've joined the not-so-elite club of dead TS-451 owners with the same fatal wounds (but at least I made it 6 or 7 years):
1) System Fan 1 Failed and ran really fast (then came back later after restart and works fine)
2) After restart 3 of 4 drives have red lights and no startup tone, so not passing POST
3) No network connection

Tried the resistor trick since I was getting a reading of 2.7v between 1 & 8 pins and putting in a 100ohm resistor got me back to 1.7v. I was happy and thought it solved the problem.

Then I restarted.

Now I have the proper voltage and when hard drives are in place have all green lights & blinking network light, but still no startup beep. I've unplugged the drives and ethernet cable so nothing's connected and still no boot and nothing shows up on an external HDMI monitor (assuming it was hooked up correctly).

One really weird behavior I found is when I plug into the #1 ethernet port and run LanScan or Qfinder, it doesn't do anything or show up on the network. When I plug into the number 2 port, the NAS somehow gets assigned an address already reserved for another device. Both ethernet ports on the NAS have a reserved address (using an Apple Airport router), so there should be no need to steal another. Deleting those reservations for the NAS still does the same thing, sometimes assigning multiple duplicate addresses which are already taken by other things.

I've since successfully migrated to a TS-453D (though I hate to give QNAP any more business after this issue) and the drives are all working fine, so that wasn't the problem, but still trying to figure out what's going on.

Anyone have any suggestions? I'm kind of out of ideas for fixing this but would love to save it to use as a backup drive. Thanks to anyone that can help!

I just had a successful story of recovering a dead TS-251.

It happened last Friday. All of sudden, the TS-251 made a big noise with very fast fan. Then I received the typical error:
Severity: Error
Date/Time: 2022/03/22 23:58:26

App Name: Hardware Status
Category: Fans
Message: [Hardware Status] System fan 1 failed.

I contacted QNAP and got not much help. Searched this forum and was pretty sure it's the LPC-CN1 voltage issue. Followed instructions and measured ~2.2V. I live in a small town with no place to buy resistors so I ordered from Amazon. The resistors came in yesterday and I soldered a 150 Ohm and it worked. Though only one resistors is used out of the 600pcs kit, it's worth it. :)

here more details:
I first used a potentiometer (a resistor you can change by turning a knob, like the volume control on old radios) to bring down the voltage from 2.2V to 1.65V. That matching resistance is 150 Ohm. So I soldered a 150 Ohm resistor between pin #1 and #10. It worked very consistently for booting up the unit. However, this is for "cold" start up. I don't know if it's also good for "warm" start up etc. But, since 150 Ohm is bigger than the 100 Ohm which is suggested by the original post, I think at least it drains less current and hopefully is thus better.

I also encountered another issue: a damaged RAM. I had two RAMs. One of them is clearly damaged because when put in the unit won't boot. However, I don't know when the RAM got damaged. It's not likely the LPC-CN1 voltage failure caused it. More likely happened when I initially try different things with the mother board and RAMs. Anyway, if somebody has the unit still not booting after the resistor fix, go check the RAM.

Anyway, my unit is now up running and I'm happy with that. For How long I don't know. I need to think about a new replacement anyway. I will update this post when it fails again. Otherwise, you can assume it is running since today 3/28/2022.

Thanks to yujungchang and many of you for all the information.

Ok well we have also joined the club with our Intel Celeron J1800 based TS-451+ which was 12 days from making 6 years throwing up "Message: [Hardware Status] System fan 1 failed." and a minute later going down.
Still for us outlived our previous Drobo and Synology with similar workloads, so after double checking we will migrate the disk pack to a replacement unit (Or restore our backup whichever is easier).

Not bad. My HS-251 with J1800 is now on 7 years and 10 months. I guess I am on borrowed time so have implemented a replacement already.

Hi,

My unit TS451+ went down over the weekend, just shy of the 6 yr mark,

I am not sure if I can understand or am equipped to follow the suggestions mentioned to fix this. I do have back up of the critical data offline.

However, Is there a way for me to use the current discs as-is on a replacement qnap NAS. If so, could someone please point to the procedure for doing this ?

Thanks

hi, i have a 2 NVR VS-12164rp with intel i5, Cold start, no boot, no beep, power unit ok... NO POST
unpluged long time , 1 of them boot, corrrectly...
i have made upgrade the QTS from 5.1.0 to 5.1.6
a lot soft of reboot , working fine; disk ok.Fan ok...
but after a cold boot ... nothing again

i check an LPC CN1 (not found), an JSP1 8pin and finaly i found an LPC CN2 10pin ? (is it the good one?)
voltage DC.. Pin1: 0.05v Pin2:0.244v Pin3:0v Pin4:0.244v Pin5:0.244v Pin6:0.244v Pin7:0.244v Pin8:GND Pin9:0.244v Pin10:GND
no 3.3v

what doing...any help

Hello,
I also have a TS-451U and I have the same problem as you.
Can you please post some pics so you can see or solder please?

Thanks in advance

mclions wrote: Wed Nov 03, 2021 1:44 am I did what was recommended exactly as you wrote, and soldering a 100 ohm resistor between pins 1 and 8 of the LPC connector, the NAS restarted without problems. QNAP TS-451U.
thank you so much for the work you do.

@dolbyman, @yujungchang, many thanks for the posts on this topic.

I was able to fix my ts-451+ nas drive, with a 100 ohm, 1/4 w resistor, attached between pin 1 and 8 with a dupont connector.

Add another fixed TS-451+ to the list. I think mine has been up since 2016 and the only other major hiccup was qlocker back in 2020 which was mitigated by air gapped redundancy. For this fix I bodged two 270R in parallel for 135R and it works. Time to move away from this qnap nightmare.

It would be great to know the % of devices out there that exhibit this fault and the likelihood that it will happen to all of us or not. Finally whether the resistor fix is just a “get you home” one or not. I wonder if it’s inevitable or not?

pretty sure only qnap could find out...we have no idea how many units qnap has sold, if or when they switched to updated processors.. so even if 1000s of owners come forward..how many millions were sold ?

QNAP 453pro 100 Ohm resistor on the back, worked for me.

Thx for this good advice!
