Need help choosing: TS231K vs TS233

Post by jsteng »

I am currently using QNAP NAS TS431P. I find it very robust and feature rich!

So I was thinking of replacing my brother's 2Drive DLINK NAS.
It is lacking in many features and was looking at TS231K and TS233

They are priced almost same; which one should I get?

Thanks for your opinion.

What are you(your brother) planning to use it for?

Basically as a NAS for his small office use. They are currently using a DLink with ALT_F firmware.
Unfortunately, it has backup limitations. QNAP's HBS is what I want them to have.
Which of these two QNAP can handle that best?

There’s a lot of difference between these two. If they are almost the same price, then I suggest the TS-233, as it has much better specifications.

The D-Link must be pretty old :)

Also, not really a great idea to be reliant on 3rd party unsupported firmware on ancient (I assume) hardware as a primary backup source for a business. (although I do run FFP on my 12+ year old D-Link DNS-323 - but it backed up by at least 3 other layers of hardware and cloud).

Moving to new hardware sounds like a great idea. :)

For basic purposes such as yours (or your brother's) get the best performing (CPU and a moderate amount of RAM0 that you can afford. Forget about other models with bells and whistles you won't need (mostly just marketing hype anyway). The only other factor may be network speed, if he has the infrastructure to support something faster than 1GBe.

Also would it make sense to get a 4 bay unit that at least gives him room for growth...

Depends on your budget.

Bigger better hard drives for less (or the same) money come out all the time so swapping in new drives in a few years with much increased capacity probably isn't going to be a big deal.

Having the space to expand isn't a bad idea though, but, having a second unit (now or in the future) also increases your depth of backup and provides hardware redundancy in case of failure. So, that's an option.

You are talking about fairly simplistic usage on a fairly basic unit so personally I'd go the hardware redundancy route, but only you can decide as there are multiple factors (overall cost, capacity requirements, importance of data/backup, space, power, etc).

MS Word documents took them 15+ years to fill up 250GB.
