in short, update your router firmware if you can. don't leave it for years without ever updating
usually these off the shelf routers e.g. asus, netgear, tplink etc, after buying brand new on launch, they will provide firmware updates for roughly 5 years. after which point they expect you to replace with a newer model.
but for those that are eco friendly, they opt for reliable third party firmwares. e.g. rt merlin which works well on asus routers. so u can extend firmware support which includes security patches.
rt merlin they recommend to wipe the nvram if you're 3 firmwares older than your current at minimum (or when it asks you to do so in the changelog). But if you wipe nvram, you have to redo all the settings manually unless you opt for scripts that can add them back for you.
i use pfsense but their updates are slow and long in between. opnsense has a faster update frequency if you prefer.
props to the youtuber for highlighting coreboot bios

Good post! I use an APU2E4 from PC Engines, also with coreboot but with OPNSense. Works great and not only gives you much higher security but also lots of useful customisation options, such as AdGuard, traffic inspection and statistics, parental control, etc.
