I assume the area I marked in rectangle is where I have to solder.

I don't have a header like in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNKN55S ... lodieCEMOI

I actually ordered this thing before I opened the case:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07VQ6YNSC

I think I will cancel that order.

Is all I need solder gun, soldering wire and the resistor? I want to be fully prepared tomorrow :) Thanks.

That's all you need (besides solder)

I know exactly which pins to solder looking at this thread but I want to do my due diligence checking the voltage and finding the ground using the multimeter I purchased.

Problem is I am a complete newbie with multimeter. I tried to find some YouTube videos teaching how to use this on a PCB but could not find a good one.

This is the multimeter I got:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000EX0AE4

Two questions:
1. How do I measure the voltage on the pins?
2. How do I make sure a specific pin is ground?

Thanks.

voltage is measured against ground

ground would be determined by setting the meter to continuity and using it with a known ground

I definitely can confirm that 8th pin is ground by placing the black lead to the chassis and the red to the 8th pin. Multimeter displays 0 ohm.

But when I measure voltage on the first pin I only see 0.005 volts. Weird.

My device might be simply past point of saving.

I thought I did an OK job soldering the resistor:

It actually might have made the situation worse. I am not sure if the HDD lights were all red before.

I think my ground contact was not great at first. Now I feel confident pins 1 and 8 are connected with the resistor. No more red hdd lights. Still stuck in system booting. Is there anything else I can diagnose?

Status light is off. USB lights up blue.

Is it possible that my system is completely dead? I don’t read any significant voltage on pin 1. Maximum voltage I see in other pins is about 0.3v.

I tested the multimeter in an outlet it shows about 120v as expected so I would assume multimeter is working fine.

For ground points I tried the screw wheree motherboard is connected to the chassis and also a point on the chassis.

Interesting thing is that the voltage reads about 0.125v when power is shutdown and drops to 0.005-0.006v when powered.

Hi I tried this fix. It does work, but only some weird conditions. If I solder or connect the resistor to the pins, it does not work. Instead if I use a longer cable, no luck

Anyone has an idea? The circuit is working since the exactly same connector is used, just a little longer.

See the pictures. I used a multimeter to test and the connection works, there is continuity in both cases

Ok trying a different thing I put the resistor between 1 and 10 (instructions says that gnd is 8 or 10). Now, even without the resistor,it does not even go on. It's completely dead. Voltage between 1 and 8 is 0 (was 2.35 before)....

“Hi I tried this fix. It does work, but only some weird conditions”

But you didn’t explain WHAT those conditions were. Reading your posts suggests that NOTHING you tried has worked.
