Use your QNAP NAS as a Wireless Base Station with the new WirelessAP Station

Post by Toxic17 »

Taipei, Taiwan, January 19, 2017 - QNAP® Systems, Inc. today released WirelessAP Station, a convenient app that allows QNAP NAS with installed PCIe wireless network cards to be used as a wireless base station.

QNAP received plaudits at CES 2017 for its numerous innovations and willingness to break boundaries. “WirelessAP Station allows users to directly connect their devices to their NAS to access files and services without affecting network performance,” said Hanz Sung, Product Manager of QNAP, adding “WirelessAP Station not only provides a wireless base station service, but also creates an independent and secure wireless network.”

QNAP NAS models with multiple PCIe slots can have additional wireless network cards installed to create independent base stations, allowing for more diverse connectivity options. WirelessAP Station is also beneficial for building a private Internet of Things environment, allowing users to set up a secure independent network that does not pass through other networking devices.

Availability & Compatibility

WirelessAP Station is now available from the QTS App Center.

NAS System Requirements:

QTS 4.3.0 (or newer)
TVS-x73 Series and other QNAP NAS with PCIe slots
Supported network cards: TP-Link TL-WDN4800 N900, TP-Link TL-WDN3800 N600,TP-Link TL-WN881ND N300, TP-Link TL-WN781ND N150

good thing we are preaching to stay away from wireless connections and NAS systems ..

Hopefully they will get an "AC" compatible card approved to at least make it somewhat useable.

Maybe with fallback to 'N' but no lower. :geek:

Agreed... although if they plan to integrate the wireless functionality into their USB Print Spooler functionality to support older wifi printers (pre AirPrint), then they likely would need to drop lower than "N".

Would be nicer to see the PCIe port being used to house M2 SSD's cards.

Hm, this certainly applies to connecting a NAS by WiFi to the network ... instead of using decent 40/10/trunked 1 GbE wired networking.

Several things came ino my mind while reading the information available:
- 11n only for now ... discussed already.
- These and similar PCIe units are WiFi client cards, intended to run as a client and on one band only.
- The interferences between these antennas must be hughe, as these are located mch to concentrated. Good wireless engineering would ask at least for one Lambda distance ... these would be 12.5 cm for 2.4 GHz resp. 6...5.4 cm for 5...5.6 GHz. And then, the reach cant be great with the antennas behind a big metal NAS enclosure.

Not sure one would sacrify Thunderbolt 3 or 2 or a dual 10 GbE cards ... for adding two WLAN cards to cover both bands.

And then, to me it's hard to understand why mixing shot-living technologies like WiFi (Wave II 11ac is coming up, WiGig is waiting around the door...) changing one generation every year at least in a NAS which is for most users a long-term investment.

Years ago, there were some reuests. The last two or three year I don't remember one community member asking for it. Nice, QNAP has it now on the list. And one wonderful proof of the ContainerStation/LinuxStation technology available of course.
