T831X periodic random resets...

I've been running my TS-831X with Firmware 4.2.2 for about 2 months or so now. I've got 2 x 4Tb in a Raid1 encrypted and 6 x 6Tb in a Raid5. I mainly use it as a pure file storage device where all my media is located (raid5) and family photos/videos on the Raid1. It seems that the unit would periodically and quite randomly reset causing the Raid1 to always need an integrity check as when I unlock it after the reboot. The Raid5 usually doesn't have integrity issues after the reboot.

The unit is not currently on a UPS but it will be as soon as my electrician install a 20amp circuit for me...

A couple of times I caught the unit during a reset. There was no power loss to the unit. It is on the same power bar as my switch and cable modem and all the other units are working fine. The Qnap would just do a long beeeep. I'd look over and some or all of the HDD lights we be off but the power LED indicator was still on and the drives would slowly come back along with some beeping.

The log files don't really say anything except the system was not shut down properly and various volumes no longer existed and the Raid1 volume was not clean and needed a check.

Any suggestions on how to enable better logging so I can try and pinpoint the problem? Maybe it is a power issue... It's currently plugged into a Cyber Power rackmount powerbar. I could move it to another outlet...

What are your HDD makes and models?

The 6Tbs are WD RED WD60EFRX and the 4Tbs are Seagate ST4000DM

I also just downloaded the diagnostic tool and dumped the log files... will have a look at them when I have time.

ST DM are bad news

Hmmm... are we saying that my random resets are due to the Seagates? I purchased these drives as they had very good longevity reports, etc but I'm more than happy to swap in some NAS drives. Are there some S.M.A.R.T stats indicators or something I can refer to that ties my resets to the drives? I'll get new drives today if that's the case and just use these as rotating backups.

those drives are notorious for all sorts of raid fails, system hangs and other "fun" stuff

Ok. Shopping for replacements. How are the Seagate Ironwolf's or older Seagate NAS drives? or stick to the WD Red NAS? I'll change the drives and see if the unit still acts up.

I looked through the Diagnostic dump files and didn't see anything strange. Just a sudden reset... Kernel messages don't seem to have time stamps...

you can always check the QNAP compatibility lists, but special NAS drives are basically all ok

Thanks again. Looks like the Ironwolf ST VN008 are supported and the ST DM are NOT so I'll relegate them to backup drives today!

I've swapped out one of the ST DM drives and rebuilt the raid on to one of the new ST VN008 drives. Have not had an issue since but I'm keeping my unit shutdown during the days as I have contractors finishing the basement... no need to risk having them cut the power on the unit!

well on Feb 15 i swapped in the second Seagate ST VN008 NAS drive and the raid1 finished rebuilding the next day.

then today i find my NAS had another random reset... so it does not seem to the drives causing the issue. any tips on how best to further diagnose? is it time for a support call?

Yes, it is maybe a fialure of the NAS itself, rather then a HD issue.
