seems to be a paid video since it's only from 1 brand, but still useful to know the type of cameras. you can then later compare to other brands if they got a similar type of camera :)

Moogle's crashplan docker recommendation for cloud backup solution
hooper610 1 point 2 days ago
crashplan and use jrcs/crashplan docker
As said before 12tb data will take forever to backup.
docker-crashplan
Lightweight (169MB) Crashplan docker container.

Features:
Automatic version upgrade
Access to all configuration files
Access to log files
https://hub.docker.com/r/jrcs/crashplan/

To use Docker in Qnap, use Container Station, Or Portainer qpkg maintained by Steph (pre-requisite is also must have container station installed first)
viewtopic.php?f=320&t=133975

The reason why i recommend the docker approach is because it's light weight, also solves the biggest issue for making the automatic version upgrade as least inconvenient as possible. But if people are happy with QPKG stick with that, if not give the docker method a try 8)

you can read other related articles to learn more how crashplan on docker works in general

How NetBIOS name resolution really works
Which name are we talking about?
The first issue is determining the kind of name. In the Windows client world, there are two basic types of names. The first kind is a name for IP addresses. Host name resolution uses a host’s file and DNS for resolution. The second kind of name is the NetBIOS name, which is used for Windows (SMB) type sharing and messaging. These are the names that are used when you are mapping a drive or connecting to a printer. These names are resolved either by using an LMHosts file on the local machine or WINS server, or by broadcasting a request.
Just to muddy the waters, Microsoft allows IP host names to be used as a substitute for NetBIOS names. Although the net effect is making it easier to resolve names, the substitution strategy makes troubleshooting problems more difficult. You not only have to troubleshoot all of the NetBIOS name resolution options, but you must also troubleshoot the IP host name resolution. The best way to determine what is broken in NetBIOS name resolution, however, starts with understanding how NetBIOS name resolution works.

This is thunderbolt in relation to Qnap for 2017

The combination of mainboard and Thunderbolt cards is very critical - you can easy end with a non- or partially working TB experience. See the users of the early HP notebooks with TB/TB2 - while apparently "certified" or "validated" by Intel - these are known to cause issues.

As QNAP does not offer a TB card as an add-on, it's well possible the TB "feature" is coded in the hardware (like the number of SATA slots, M.2 slots, product name, serial number, ...), and the TB adaptors would not be enabled, the network config on these not done - the card wont become available to QTS at all.

Last, the equation USB-C == Thunderbolt3 is wrong. The expectation that every notebook (or computer, or whatever) with USB-C has Thunderbolt3 is wrong. The other way round, every Thunderbolt3 port can serve as an USB-C port is correct. And misleadingly, every Thunderbolt3 cable can be used as USB-C cable. But never the other way round. Most notably, we won't see Thunbderbolt3 ie. on an AMD platform, too - but you will see systems with USB 3.1 ports (like some QNAP NAS models with Intel or AMD platforms), commonly not using USB-C ports, but USB-A instead to make a clear difference that these are host ports. Still USB 3.1 - but no Thunderbolt there ever.

Said that, Intel is very strict in allowing Thunderbolt3 compliance testing: A random combination of mainboard and TB card is unlikely to work.

Regards,
-Kurt

The reviewer made the terrible mistake of claiming the Qnap was a DAS and NAS as something the Synology wasn't.
Both are NAS. The Qnap t/bolt connection is IP over t/bolt, not native t/bolt as in DAS implementation.
Yeah - QNAP probably does need to be careful on some of their marketing. Their T3 faq page does say though that it isn't a DAS towards the bottom.

the TS-253B says it's using type c for quick access

However as Schumy pointed out that for now
schumaku wrote:All current QA ports are indeed 1 GbE implementations. If Multigig is becoming more popular, convinced QNAP will boost new hardware QA ports to 2.5 or 5 GbE.
Simply put, connectivity options to access directly to QNAP NAS is either
1. thunderbolt (tb1, tb2, tb3 depending)
2. quick access via usb (only available for quick access port using usb for select models)
3. ethernet (1Gbe, 10Gbe or 40Gbe depending)

you gain access to these select types of connection options depending on which qnap model you get.

Essentially use gorhil's ublock picker element to select the slider UI to create a rule to hide it. I tested on Chrome, though will probably also work on firefox which also has this add-on available as well.

MOOGLE, nice to meet you. I was given a link to your post above. You say "This is a subject i am most unfamiliar with", but have attached very helpful information/videos, which help others get a good and fast basic understanding of this crazy dynamic of interconnectivity/non-connectivity. Thanks for doing this, its a big help!

Do you know if anyone has tested what will/will-not work on Qnap units that do/do-not have built in TB, e.g. x82T or x82? For example, it would be good to know for sure if:

a. On x82 T2/3 models: will they communicate with USB 3.0 PCs/notebooks via a TB hub, which has USB 3.0 ports. If so, this would, for example, enable non-Mac notebooks (with USB 3.0 ports) to connect at USB 3.0 speed vs being limited to 1GbE. This would be far slower than TB speed, but far faster than standard ethernet speed. For those with non-Mac notebooks, it would be a reason to buy a QNAP T model.

b. On non-T models, will ANY add-in cards work to yield faster than 1GbE connectivity for PCs/Notebooks [I exclude 10/20/40 GbE cards from this question, since we know that works, but users may not want or cant use that, eg notebooks], such as TB card or USB3.1 card or even USB 3.0 (if I understand correctly, QNAP native USB3.0 ports CANNOT be used to connect with PCs/Notebooks.

All the best. Thanks

yes theres a lot of things here i am not an expert on but i am learning ^^; But what i don't know personally i'll reference others who may know way more than i do. I'm not only using this megathread to help others, but also a bookmark for myself doing my own research (a hobby of mine) :)

thunderbolt especially i haven't used it myself, the hurdle for me to get thunderbolt connectivity is a new intel upgrade (for my desktop) probably kabylake? with a motherboard that has thunderbolt3 on it (probably usb 3.1 gen2 type c ports?) as well as a qnap unit with thunberbolt3.

tb hubs hm... not sure how they work (well i do but i don't know what the caveats and bottlenecks will be). i guess if their thunderbolt devices, then the question is how the hub is connected to your desktop or laptop? whether there is a bottleneck there. definitely need other users familiar with this kind of setup to comment on.

qnap expansion cards are listed here (their supported in specific models only, so check the compatibility page for that)
https://www.qnap.com/en/accessories/

QNAP Usb 3.1 addon card

The QNAP USB 3.1 expansion card provides speeds of up to 10Gb/s – double that of USB 3.0 – to greatly boost data transfer performance. It features dual USB 3.1 Gen2 ports for connecting two USB devices and provides compatibility with newer, faster USB devices for transferring large media files.

the only time i tested qnap usb 3 ports (of which my model has) was on external usb hdd storage device which worked. I also tried charging my smartphone device using the available usb port on the front

Okay your question interested me so i looked into it and found this
Can I connect my PC to the Turbo NAS via USB or eSATA cable to access the DATA?
last updated: 2013-04-19

Applied Models:
All NAS Series

Answer:
No, the USB/eSATA port on the Turbo NAS can only be connected with peripheral devices. You can only access the Turbo NAS data through the Ethernet network.
https://www.qnap.com/en/how-to/faq/arti ... s-the-data

However i saw this you might be interested to know some of the more recent models with QuickAccess USB feature implies that you can. So maybe the Qnap FAQ need to update to say (direct access usb feature for specific models are able to do this)

If your question is whether usb 3.1 qnap addon cards will also consequently add in QuickAccess feature, that is an interesting question. But one i myself am not sure of either (i never used addon cards yet so far). You may need to ask helpdesk for further clarification on that, also post back here what you find out.

For now if you go here, you can use the checklist for USB QuickAccess Port
https://www.qnap.com/en/product/?conditions=2-3

the TS-253B says it's using type c for quick access so that implies usb 3.1 maybe gen2?

10Gbps is definitely faster than the 1gig ethernet port :)

ccclapp wrote:

dang i spent too long editing researching, didn't notice you replied :ashamed: anyway hope you get the new post. Short answer for your 2nd question, the feature your probably interested in is USB QuickAccess Port for select models. Whether using an addon card for usb will add quickaccess, i'm not sure, that you got to ask helpdesk yourself :)

tb hubs hm... not sure how they work. i guess if their thunderbolt devices, then the question is how the hub is connected to your desktop or laptop? whether there is a bottleneck there. definitely need other users familiar with this kind of setup to comment on.
Yes, the connection would be: On QNAP @ TB port <=> TB/USB3.0 Hub <=> PC/Notebook @ USB3.0 port.
I fully acknowledge the top speed would be USB3.0 speed. But that is much faster than normal ethernet speed.
The question is if QNAP's implementation of TB2/3 will work via a hub (and which is doing a signal conversion). As you've listed, QNAP uses TB to basically do VERY FAST ethernet-over-TB. It does NOT use TB in the "normal" way, but only in this "virtual ethernet" way. Again the question is if it will do that with a HUB in the middle???? Someone w a x82 TB unit could test.
the only time i tested qnap usb 3 ports (of which my model has) was on external usb hdd storage device which worked. I also tried charging my smartphone device using the available usb port on the front
Yes, with its "native" USB, the usb only connects to external HDDs etc as a dumb in/out storage location. It does NOT enable its "virtual ethernet" via its native USB ports.
I was wondering is ANY type of 3rd party add-on card (USB/USB3/USB3.1/TB2/TB3) would invoke the "virtual ethernet" use. I have read one can add a QNAP TB card to a non-T model x82 and it becomes a T model x82 (meaning is you take a TB card from a T model x82 QNAP and put is in a non T model QNAP x82 the non t model unit will "become" a T model. This means the T aspect is not hard coded into the model and it is all about having the compatable T card. Unfortunately QNAP does not sell its T cards as addons, so this fact doesn't do much for us, except tell us "it is all about the card, not the NAS".
dang i spent too long editing researching, didn't notice you replied :ashamed: anyway hope you get the new post. Short answer for your 2nd question, the feature your probably interested in is USB QuickAccess Port for select models. Whether using an addon card for usb will add quickaccess, i'm not sure, that you got to ask helpdesk yourself :)
Yes the USB QuickAccess port does what I am describing, but interestingly only at 1GbE, I think its only a USB2 port. The models that comes on aren't high enough powered so I ve moved to x82 (but wish it at least had the Q-A port

Thanks for your exploration!

You'll probably need to create a new thread asking this, not sure i can help with that, also doubt asking here will with get enough visibility for others to answer :)

correct.

that is very interesting info, one i was not aware of before

really? i didn't know QA port was limited to 1GbE. was the target desktop/laptop using USB 3.1 gen2 (to rule that out as the bottleneck?).

But seems like there 2 routes. Either go TB3 or get a model with QA to connect via USB in that way.

Just recently i added the TVS-X73 to my recommendation list seeing as it can do plex transcoding just fine, also has QA. But if your going with TB3 then there is either TVS-1282T3 or TVS-882BRT3.

If not all your devices support tb, then maybe like you said a hub would help? Maybe like this

or is this better?

Thanks for your exploration!
np, i also learned new stuff in the process

Yes, I have a 473 thinking that is what I needed. 1 week later, I have ordered an 682 pentium, and an i7 6700k chip to swap into it to max out power. I am certain tat on the x73 the QA poer is limited to 1GbE. For me it sustains 112MBps. QNAP documentation confirms 1GBe. For my notebook that speed is better than ethernet, since not degradation (i.e. I dont get 1GbE via wire). Since I am moving to the 682 I have been exploring id I can connect to my non-Mac notebook in any faster way than normal 1GbE via wire with either the T or non-T units. Since my notebook only has USB 3.0 I started thinking about the docks. There are plenty of TB to USB 3.0 docs, question is if QNAP wil takl to them.

Sorry to take up a bunch of your page! I will report back if I learn anything meaningful, but otherwise leave you alone (for now) ;-)

Thanks for your efforts!

All current QA ports are indeed 1 GbE implementations. If Multigig is becoming more popular, convinced QNAP will boost new hardware QA ports to 2.5 or 5 GbE.

Unless the notebook does not have a GbE port, something must be badly broken on your cabling and/or the switches involved. You should have an eye on this to fix this than think about whatever docks which are unlikely supported or workable on the QNAP NAS.

Back to Moogle now.

Are you saying "normal" ie 1,000 Mbps Ethernet should have real-world sustained speed > 112MB/s?
