Each post with have a title URL which is the "post" ID. link that to a URL in the first post with the topic of that post.

Users can then look at the first post, read the topic titles/URLs and click on the link for the correct post. ;)
you mean relocated changelog to 1st post in the thread?

yes that makes sense.

i was actually hoping Moderator is able to do this?

if not i'll try to do it manually.
Yes your first post should have links only to the content of the thread. It make life a lot easier to navigate.

If you add 3 or 4 posts to the thread now we moderators or you can move some content at the start.

The forums limit 20 URLs per post. So best to have the first 3-4 posts just for links to the posts within the thread.

thats the problem thats why i did not go down that route.

which is why changelog p2 instead p1. because a single link points direct to changelog, so doesn't matter where it's located it can easily be found on page 1st post at the very top.

When that changelog is full. I can create a new post located anywhere e.g. page 101, then in page1 i'd have a changelog V2, link direct to there. So thats how i got it structured for future growth :)

But yes if moderators can edit, feel free to do so :) any of my posts in the megathread. Places of interest is changelog.

If possible are you able to insert some blank posts in page 1 near the beginning? that would help a lot :D I tried this but they quicky filled

yes thats possible.

well if you create one to give me an idea what your aiming for to test that out as a initial beta test. we can work together, and i can copy paste into new thread. i don't mind doing that.

For now.... regarding your post id suggestion.

example post id is

viewtopic.php?f=45&t=133965#p624801

but to reduce usage of direct urls i'd only be able to do display like this

*update

what your suggesting is this right?

- subject titles
1. how to setup vpn

Code: Select all

......
2. NAS to NAS

Code: Select all

.....

A bit different from changelog, as it only links to main articles available without mentioning changes.

The original purpose for changelog was just a timeline for edits made so people know what has changed.

Whereas what your suggesting is different isn't it? it's only link to the subject matter only?

i re-reviewed first post. Like for example already page 1 post 1 has articles already in it. Maybe it would have been better to bump the article subject content like "how tos..." to post 6 and above.
Image

And we can restrict posts 1-5 for like you suggested

The reason why i didn't do it that way initially because i wanted a simplified approach as mentioned.
- link to changelog
- a quick mini guide to using ctrl+f for navigating megathread
- an immediate view of create helpdesk ticket for newbies to see right off the bat.

very simple straight forward design.

I still don't think using direct links for subject matters post ids e.g. "how to's....". on a single page is the best way to go (code tags is fine) even with reserved posts because can quickly run out of enough allowed links for this to be workable.

If we tried to keep all the subject headers in the few reserved posts in p1, we will run out eventually. That is why i did not want to commit to doing that.

Instead i had changelogs system for now. That is more or less the same idea as subject header links you had in mind, however it's located in a separate page 1 click away.

If you can come up with a good posts 1-5 layout, i can then commit to relocating to a V2 megathread for a cleaner look. Right now i'm out of ideas how that improved look would be like to start on it just yet. If i have some live examples i can try work with that to try out.

so now its a Subject title with URL built in. (BBcodes) looks much better!

the other thing is all these FAQs tutorials done need to be in one mega thread. create multiple threads. just link them in one FAQ thread.

yes it does look better. and probably the best method to boot.

but reason i didn't do this is because using this example
viewtopic.php?f=45&t=134948#p631294

see the 1st post wasn't enough so a 2nd post was created. Even with reserved posts in page1, this will not be good enough in the long term. Thats why i opted instead for code tag, which people can copy and paste into url bar and it bypasses the URL 20 limitation. It's a minor inconvenience, but it's still straight forward enough.

also as explained in the other post (you probably read already), simplified listing is good. But because i'm in favor of maintaining a full changelog, i decided to skip a simplified list in favor of that. Cause i don't have time to maintain 2 listing types clean listing and full changelog both. Me personally i rather be able to know when something gets changed so i can keep track of things for maintenance purposes.

Maybe others can create a separate simplified listing page in a new thread specifically just for that.

Toxic17 wrote: the other thing is all these FAQs tutorials done need to be in one mega thread. create multiple threads. just link them in one FAQ thread.
So you want each "how to" to have their own threads, then this megathread is merely linking to them only ?

Well thats one way of doing it. But reason why i did not do it that way because then i'd accused of flooding the forum. At least if i did it under 1 single megathread then people can avoid visiting this thread if their bothered by it. But on the positive side, with individual threads for subject matter, people can expand specifically regarding those subject matters.

Doubt we will get a perfect faq, but i go with what is least to be an annoyance to others, also something within what i'm comfortable with and able to handle on my own.

Maybe the QNAP wiki would have been better (so others can also contribute to editting), but i made a casual faq megathread just for fun  theres bound to be some downsides to this setup. suggestions are welcome but i'm not sure that we will be able to implement everything unfortunately :(
