Has anyone tried to rework the PCB by changing the CPU? I think Intel managed to fix the LPC issue in their D1 stepping. No idea how much that would cost.

The fix is well documented in this thread - you won't find anything obvious by looking at the motherboard.

You need to solder a 100 ohm resistor to pin #1 and one of the ground pins (I think it's #8 or #10). It has worked for the vast majority of folks in the thread.

I will tell you from experience, the TS651 is impacted by this. Mine died weeks ago.

The LPC, USB and SD Card buses circuitry degradation issues also apply to other Bay Trail processors such as ... Celeron J1800 and J1750 series -- as those are based on the same affected silicon.

Wow - the 100 ohm resistor fix worked perfectly on my 5 year old 2 bay TS-251! Thanks all!

I want to replace it anyway, as I now don't trust it. But all the similar home models still use Atom or Celeron processors. Will they end up with the same failure eventually?

A $300-$400 NAS should last longer than 5 years. I checked Synology NAS's too, and it's the same with them (Atom & Celeron cpus).

I'm not willing to shut mine off when not in use, as it would be too much trouble to boot it up every time I wanted to use it, and it takes way too long.

Sorry. By the time I thought about doing that, I had already done the final reassembly of the unit.

However, my repair is similar to this one that soulcages01 posted just a few replies ago on Dec 12th:

Procedure-wise, I first soldered on some temporary leads to pins 1 & 10, so that I could more easily try different resistor values if necessary, with the daughter board mounted, and the drives plugged in. That turned out to be unnecessary, as the 100 ohm worked. So I disassembled it back down to the main board, removed the temp jumpers, and soldered on the resistor to the header, just like soulcages01. But if your model doesn't have the header, you'll have to solder directly to the board.

Not that I blame QNAP for this, as it's Intel's bug, but just for a change, I'm going to try a Synology NAS, as I've never tried one before.

I ordered a DS720+. The CPU is Intel Celeron J4125 4-core 2.0 GHz, burst up to 2.7 GHz. It also has h/w encryption.

I'm assuming that post-C2000 CPUs are not subject to this particular failure (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silvermont#Erratum).
