[Guide] How to setup a wordpress site on the QNAP

Post by Moogle Stiltzkin »

There was a recent youtube guide by qnap about setting up wordpress on your QNAP.

a while back i saw someone mentioned a secure method to host wordpress on the qnap using container station.

Actually i was looking for myself about setting up a wordpress, i thought that bluehost looked decent. it has unlimited bandwidth, and also storage for things like photos. and it's quite cheap too. to setup wordpress you just use the 1 click to setup.

i personally prefer that approach, so i can keep my NAS data separate from my webhosting, in case the site gets hacked :) I'd then just backup website to the NAS.

other things you can do for setting up your wordpress, is maybe change the skin/theme. This is a good site to find paid themes
https://themeforest.net/category/wordpress

i bought a couple in the past. usually i go for something cheap, looks good and has many features. These kinds of themes have a good backend so you can easily manage your wordpress site. There are some very neat themes where they even make it SEO optimize, ajax loading etc....

and what features it doesn't have, you can add plugins for more functionality for your site. though it takes a lot of testing to ensure you don't use to many plugins that it negatively affects your site performance.

you definitely want a plugin that limits login attempts :(

setting a website backup is important, for the wordpress and the mysql database.

Wordpress - just another vulnerabilities to add to the already overwhelming amount of insure packages on a QNAP

old post.

this is no longer my recommendation.

if you want to make a website, i suggest doing it on a web hosting service separate from qnap nas.

bluehost seems reasonably priced for what they offer. if you expected better performance, then there should be pricier alternatives out there :'
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SeN_B0Bo87E

for the qnap, store your important data, and use it on lan offline.

something like plex port forwarding may be safe enough.
https://www.reddit.com/r/PleX/comments/ ... _external/

or if you must use it remotely, use a vpn
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgielyUFGeQ

i do use the qnap for things like unifi controller qpkg, that uses it's own app web page. but is used on the lan, which is not exposed online. the qnap is fine for things this that is not exposed online.

i think it is fine as is (for archival purposes), because i managed to post my updated opinion on this subject.

also i'm not a technical expert on webhosting on the qnap, so maybe there is a way to do it securely. but as a layman i haven't figured how. so i can't in good conscience recommend web hosting and publically exposing it online as such.

maybe someone else who knows more can explain how that is possible :' (i want to know as well)

in the original post, i merely linked how others had provided the steps for creating wordpress site on qnap for anyone curious for how it's done, that was my intent at the time of posting, just to illustrate the how.

so can webhosting be done on qnap? yes, i've done it before (when i knew way less than i do today). Is it recommended? and should you? that is the million dollar question. i honestly don't think so :( at least not in it's current form, and definitely not using the default web server that is usually outdated compared to the unofficial webserver packages anyway (qnapclub.eu may be actively maintaining more up to date webserver components)

i think it makes more sense to do webhosting from things like bluehost, so even if it does get compromised, at least it's not your nas where you are most likely to store your important data. and you have backups on your qnap for your website (although you may need to change some settings that got your site hacked into in the first place). And all your important data is on the qnap, and these things aren't exposed online. so i think these 2 things should be kept separate if you care about the data you store on your qnap.
