Shucking external hdds for QNAP

I am still amazed that manufacturers havent locked those external drives yet ..shouldnt be too hard to firmware lock them to only work with those specific usb to sata bridges...

shucking must eat into their baseline

I buy all my drives bare..the warranty alone makes it worth it (and I still doubt that single drives have TLER enabled..as that would be bad for single drives)

i didn't do shucking yet myself. because i wonder how reliable these hdds are :/

maybe those people who had long term experience with shucked hdds can say as to their life expectancy, and how well they performed in raid rebuilds.

i think it was mentioned that these external hdds come with shorter warranties as well.

I have recently bought 6x10tb and have 6x8 and 2x6tb.
No issues with any yet - oldest being about a year.
I will report back in a year or 2.
The "Whites" averaged out to be about $70 less than a red.

Bottom line I guess is whether and/or when they break!
