QNAP TL-D800UC and TL-R1200UC USB 3.1 Gen 2 JBOD Expansion Chassis

Post by Moogle Stiltzkin »

TX-500p and TX-800P (are the previous expansion models. Has raid? can only be connected to the QNAP NAS models only?)

then came out TR-004 (has raid. Can be connected to the QNAP NAS, OR be a standalone storage device, which you can then also connect to the pc direct)

and now this TL-D800UC and TL-R1200UC (no raid? )

next there is gonna be a TR-008T (in addition it will also have thunderbolt. Before if you needed 8bay, the recommendation was the cheapest 8bay qnap for that, but with the tr-008 i assume the price is cheaper than that i assume?? :' )

So in regards to TL-D800UC

for jbod it works like this right?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbOqbR-ou3E

ok so a dead hard drive i get how that works. but what about a scenario for bit rot. does raid, raid scrubbing and meta data parity that comes with raid help with that? or are they in a similar predicament?

in what case scenario would jbod be warranted? and for how many hdds in total would it be acceptable for? and at what turning point would you instead suggest using raid instead?

Because i noticed that the Tr-004 has raid capability
https://nascompares.com/qnap-tr-004-nas ... on-review/

So i'm wondering then, what is the point for the jbod models when compared to that previous model i mentioned. it's nice though that it is usb 3.1 (10gb)

anyway, i'm just wondering whether these jbod expansion models would be a good fit for backup storage purposes? Or is raid recommended or overkill for backup (which is why they are coming out with a jbod model?)
https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2634142

Jbod spanning combine all hdds into a single volume ? or jbod basic mode is recommended ? (i'm assuming the later) i also found this where it's explained that for backup, it's best to use this type of device separate from the qnap to avoid potential issues (i'm assuming this model can be used as a standalone box like the Tr-004 can? or is it going to be similar to the earlier TX-500p where it could only be used with a QNAP NAS only? )

some sauce i've read up on this
