QNAP NAS Community Forum

My NAS ts-869 pro is nearing its end of life date.

It would be a waste to just throw it in the bin. What are the possibilities to keep using the system.

- small network standalone without internet connection as backup storage for pc’s comes to mind.

What I am wondering is:
- are there motherboards which can fit the case and turn it in a different machine?
- are there qnap motherboards which might fit the case to make it a modern qnap system?

It could be for any EOL qnap system. It saves waste and might be cheaper to repurpose an old system.

What are your thoughts?

just leave it ...dont expose it to the web (no qnap nas should be) and it should work just fine

no need or way to mod this into a modern device (if you could..probably more expensive than just buying a new device)

No. The mobos are unit specific, therefore component layout is unit specific.

EOL does not mean dead, the unit will probably function for years to come. Just keep using the device until it is no longer functional.

Many of my NAS units are EOL and beyond and they function just perfectly. I recently picked up a TS-809 Pro on-line for $100 to use as a back-up storage array. It functions just fine, all drive bays work, etc. I just need to reflash the DOM and insert new disks and it'll be good to go in its new repurposed life.

There really are few reason to purchase a brand-new NAS, especially if the NAS is powered by an anemic CPU, just buy used, the x69 Pro series can functional as little more than a proper storage server.

Is it also ok to use them over the internet?

Do you use your nas locally like within the network?

I use my NAS's both internally on my home LAN, and I have a couple of NAS units that have some services accessible from the Internet as well, such as;
- plex
- email server (xmail - smtp/smtps)
- email retrieval (dovecot over imaps)
- webmail (roundcube over https)
- xmpp/omemo
- basic website hosting
- torrent (QTransmission)

All NAS management, phpMyAdmin, nextcloud, etc are not available on the Internet and require the use of VPN to access those services.

That is very good, but too technical for me.

I just use nas mainly for storage of personal photos that I share over the internet for friends and families, but with EOL will it be comprimised?

Don't even share a non EOL QNAP NAS over the internet

Use dropbox,onedrive,etc.

If you are using the QNAP provide apps (such as Photostation, Filestation, etc), it won't matter if the NAS is EOL or not. The QNAP QTS applications are not secure and your NAS will eventually be compromised, EOL or otherwise.

For this to happen the NAS would need to have the main port usually 8080 open to the WAN ?

search the forum for unraid

the idea is install unraid on a usb flash drive, go to the qnap bios, unselect boot from dom, and select boot from the usb flash drive. so when you power on the qnap it uses unraid instead which should be regularly maintained based on your license.

not sure if it will work on your model, i assume it would.

but based on hardware specs, i'd just replace your model with a newer qnap model tbh

I came across this as the first post when searching for EOL and I have read all of the above, however I am confused.
When a device goes EOL, is it that the EOL options differ as to what class unit you have?

Different threads have noted things such as when a product becomes EOL there's no further firmware updates and that you 'might' get lucky and have large security holes fixed.
I have a 1282 which is EOL, yet, according to the EOL page the 1282 whilst EOL is still full supported on hardware and firmware and has active support.

Granted I'm a happy camper and no longer panicked, however, I am trying to understand why there isn't a clear answer on EOL products and does this mean I am on 'tenterhooks' and need to check the EOL page every 6 months?

Please refer to this list.. QNAP is sadly confused about the terms EOL (end of life) and EOS (end of sale) .. but this link will show you the current support status of your device

QNAP has some unknown factors on how long after end of sale/production devices are still getting updates (feature/security) .. it probably has to do with the market share of given device

That link is precisely the one that led to my confusion. Good idea to supply it for others.
I did notice you had put EOS in 'another post' (something about an English colloquialism was in brackets iirc) however I hadn't twigged what the 'S' stood for

I'm guessing the EOL is a translation error that no one has either raised an internal ticket for, or those folks have realised it's going to take to much internal politics / procedures to make a 1 character change, so it's just been lived with and it is simpler for customers to get used to it / work out.
