Whatever fits your budget and/or needs.

They will all work (what NAS model?), so that is not a limitation.

For my next upgrade, I will probably switch from WD Red ('Plus') to ST Ironwolf

On my 853BU I am already on ST Ironwolf Pro .. and happy with them(besides a 1/3 DOA rate .. but that could have been shipping from newegg).

I have HGST (Hitachi) drives and 1 drive failed and their warranty process was rubbish, 1st you had to find very specific packaging otherwise you warranty could be void and when you do ship the drive to them to test and then they will check it before sending replacement drive which was a few weeks turnaround. - you would think it is the same as WD as they own HGST.

WD has one of the best return policy as as you can do advance replacement which they send out the next day or so and then you can use the same packaging to send the faulty on back, for me it was around few days turnaround.

I have not used Seagate drives for NAS so not sure of their process. Does anyone know if seagate offer advance replacement?

I have HGST 10TB drives and only one has failed since having them (4 years now) and i setup WD Gold 10TB drives in my nephews one and have worked perfect for over 5 years.

I have used WD RED (non pro version) and had few of them failed on my previous setup and another one i did for a friend. the WD RED Pro has 5 year warranty as opposed the standard RED which have 3 year warranty.

well I had some weird experience with WD recently ... 2 WD Red manufactured 2017 which i bought mid of 2018, failed end of 2020

WD claims they are out of warranty cos they failed after 3 years calculated from production date ...

I still have the receipt, and as I continued writing back I think my ticket will get escalated one level soon ... but it's time consuming

I guess I won't be very successful as after my last request the date got corrected but also the status got changed to "OEM HDD" ... well it's time to try some other brand ;)

If the prices are in the same range for all HDD manufacturers, I’d go with the Ironwolf drives. The Ironwolf drives have the added benefit of RV sensors in their midrange NAS drives, and the IHM for QNAP is a good nice to have as well.

I have traditionally been a WD Red and HGST user. Since 2019, I have been replacing all my drives with Ironwolf drives, and I have not been disappointed at all.

Depending on the drives you choose, those will last 3 or 5 years in warranty and maybe a bit longer out of it. So the question is more like "What amount of data will I have in 3, 5 or x years?" and "Is this offering me a good (enough) price per year?". That's a question no one can answer for you, but you yourself.

Regarding the latest CHIA mining boom, prices have rissen a lot lately. They are dropping again at the moment, but are still higher than before. For the Seagate Exos, I bought right before that, are still at 160% (had been at 314% in the beginning). Those where 18TB drives, but I assume the prices may differ the same from 10 TB on wards. Personally, I'd wait a bit longer, if the current quota is not to high. And needs upgrading in short term.
